Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- Brandon's Keystone Centre will be a busy place this weekend as western Manitoba hockey fans will have a chance to escape the snow and cold and enjoy an action packed weekend of hockey.
In addition to Westman Communications Group Place hosting the first place Wheat Kings and Saskatoon Blades on Friday night, the Kinsmen and Optimist Arenas at the Keystone as well as the Canada Games Sportsplex will host the 17th Annual Genesis Hospitality High School Hockey Tournament.
The Wheat Kings return home Friday riding a season high 6-game winning streak and coming off an impressive 3-game Western Hockey League road trip that saw the defending Eastern Division Champions pick up victories in Swift Current, Medicine Hat and Regina. As well, Brandon enters weekend play riding a 7-game home ice winning streak and sits atop the division with a record of 20-9-0-1, good for 41 points and a two point lead on the second place Pats, who play the Oil Kings in Edmonton Thursday.
The home stand will continue with games on Wednesday and Friday nights against Kelowna and Saskatoon respectively. Friday's game will feature the Westoba Credit Union Kids Loonie Scramble. Eight lucky fans (12 and under) will have the chance to scramble their way to $500 in cold, hard loonies.
Tickets to all three games are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
Among those expected to attend the game are sixteen of the 24 teams attending this weekend's High School Tournament, including four from Ontario - the Red Lake Rams, Dryden Eagles, Beaver Brae Broncos of Kenora as well as the Fort Frances Muskies. Others include Westwood, John Taylor, Oak Park Raiders, Sturgeon Heights Huskies, Morden Thunder, WC Miller Aces of Altona, Sanford Collegiate, Pembina Tigers, Mountain Mustans, Stonewall Collegiate, Neepawa and Dauphin.
This year's Genesis Tournament will feature six of the top ten teams from 4A schools in the province and will get underway later today. The Championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Kinsmen Arena.
In off-ice news, veterans Joe Caligiuri and Nathan Green will be visiting Green Acres School at noon Thursday as Manitoba Public Insurance and the Brandon Sun host December's School Patrol Luncheon. In addition to providing the school's Safety Patrol unit with tickets to an upcoming game and signing autographs, the players will join the students for lunch, provided by Subway Restaurants of Brandon.
