Wheaties to face Calgary

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings will meet the Calgary Hitmen one of this year's Western Hockey League Eastern Conference semi-finals.

The Hitmen, who disposed of the Lethbridge Hurricanes in five games during their best of seven opening round series, learned that they would be facing the Wheat Kings Tuesday night when the defending champion Medicine Hat Tigers held on to beat the visiting Red Deer Rebels 5-4 in the seventh and deciding game of thier quarterfinal series.

The Wheat Kings, who defeated Moose Jaw four games to one in their opening round playoff series, will host games one and two this Friday and Saturday, before the series shifts to Calgary's Pengrowth Saddledome for games three and four on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 12th and 13th. Game five would then be played Friday, April 15th at the Keystone Centre and game six (if necessary) would be played back in Calgary on Monday, April 18th. Should a seventh and deciding game be played, it would be on Wednesday, April 20th in Brandon.

Tickets to the series opener are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office. As of Tuesday, close to 2,500 tickets had been purchased for game one. Fans can also order tickets by phone by calling 726-3555 or by going online at ticketmaster.ca

In Tuesday's deciding game at The Arena in Medicine Hat, the Tigers jumped out to a 4-1 third period lead before having to hang on as the Rebels came fighting back with three third period tallies. Medicine Hat got goals from five different players including all star defenceman Cam Barker while Canadian National Junior Team member Colin Fraser had three assists in a losing cause.

The Tigers will now meet Prince Albert in round two, starting this weekend.

Out west meanwhile, the defending Conference Champion Everett Silvertips defeated the Winter Hawks 3-2 in Portland to win that series four games to three. Everett will now play Nigel Dawes and the Kootenay Ice in one of two Western semi-finals while the Seattle Thunderbirds will meet the defending Memorial Cup Champion Kelowna Rockets in the other.
