Wheat Kings Set to Host the Ice
January 17, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings will be looking to climb back into the Western Hockey League playoff conversation this weekend when they play host to the Kootenay Ice in a 2-game doubleheader at Westoba Place.
The series opener Friday night is "Winnipeg Blue Bomber Night" while Saturday's game is a presentation of Maxim Truck and Trailer.
The Wheat Kings dropped two of three games last weekend to fall below the .500 mark for the first this season and enter the weekend with a record of 17-18-3-3.
Brandon currently trails the Calgary Hitmen, who occupy the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, by six points with a game in hand.
Kootenay meanwhile is in tenth place, having compiled a record of 10-29-6-1.
In the only game played between the two teams, the ICE came up 4-3 winners in Cranbrook, back on October 24th.
While the Wheat Kings continue to lead the league with a dozen Manitoba born players on the roster, the ICE have five, including defenceman Jordan Chudley of Souris.
Entering the weekend series, captain Stelio Mattheos continues to lead the Wheat Kings in scoring with 29 goals and 55 points in 38 games, followed by Luka Burzan with 25 goals and 49 points in 41 games.
As for the ICE, center Peyton Krebs remains among the league leaders with sixteen goals and 51 points.
Friday night's game will feature a special guest performing the ceremonial opening face-off.
Blue Bomber quarterback Matt Nichols will also be available for autographs during the first intermission on the Keystone Centre's main concourse, just outside the west main entrance to the arena.
A 2-time winner of the Blue Bomber Most Outstanding Player Award, Nichols has been a Blue Bomber since his acquisition from the Edmonton Eskimos in 2015.
During the 2016 season - his first as a full time starter for Winnipeg - the Redding, California native passed for 3,666 yards while starting the final thirteen games. One of only three CFL quarterbacks to lead their respective club to 10-plus wins in 2016, he had a streak of 166 consecutive passes without an interception.
Nichols followed up in 2017 by setting career-best marks for passing with 4,472 yards and 28 touchdowns in 17 games. His 103.8 quarterback-efficiency rating topped all CFL signal callers. He led Winnipeg to an 11-6-0 record in his seventeen regular season starts.
This past season, Nichols recovered from a pre-season knee injury, to lead the Bombers to a 10-8 record and a third place finish in the Western Conference. After beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Semi-Final, the Bombers fell to Calgary in the Western Conference Final.
Tickets to both weekend games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
