Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Dauphin, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings are back in it!
Three third period goals, including two in a span of 18 seconds lifted Brandon to an exciting come from behind 5-3 victory over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers in game three of their Western Hockey League Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series.
Trailing 3-2 after Jaeger White's powerplay goal five minutes into the third, the Wheat Kings rallied a minute later and regained the lead on goals by rookie Ben McCartney and veteran Evan Weinger.
The score stayed that way until the final two minutes of the third when veteran center Ty Lewis added the insurance goal. For the 19-year old local product, who became the first Brandon player in 34 years to hit the century mark in points during the regular season, the goal was his second of the game and third of the series.
The Wheat Kings, who still trail the best of seven series two games to one, will be hoping to even up the best of seven affair when the two teams face off again Wednesday night at Dauphin's Credit Union Place.
After trading goals in both the first and second periods, the two teams opened things up in the third Tuesday night.
Medicine Hat, who outshot the Wheat Kings 35-33 in the game, had sixteen shots in the third but Brandon's Dylan Myskiw - who was making his first start of the series - was excellent, turning aside all but one.
Connor Gutenberg rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who kept their composure most of the night and wound up only serving three minor penalties.
After scoring five powerplay goals through the first two games of the series, the Tigers were limited to one on Tuesday night. Brandon meanwhile was 0 for 1 with the man advantage.
In addition to White, who played thirteen games for the Wheat Kings during the 2015-16 campaign, the Tigers got goals from Mark Rassell and Gary Haden.
The Wheat Kings, who finished third in the WHL with an impressive home ice record of 27-6-2-1 during the regular season, have been forced to play their first round series in Dauphin due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair currently occupying Brandon's Keystone Centre.
This marks the second year in a row that the Wheat Kings have called Dauphin home in the playoffs. Medicine Hat won both games at Credit Union Place last spring to complete a first round series sweep.
Tickets to game four Wednesday night in Dauphin will go back on sale at 10am at the box office at Credit Union Place.
This week's series in Dauphin is a presentation of Catalyst Credit Union, Twin Motors, Aspen Insurance and Mazergroup.
