Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Branodn, MB -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have taken a 2-0 lead in their Western Hockey League Eastern Conference Quarterfinal with the Swift current Broncos.
Jay Fehr's goal with 5:06 left in the third period was the difference as the Wheat Kings beat the Broncos 5-3 in game two of their best of seven opening round playoff series.
Fehr also had a pair of assists in the contest while linemate Aaron Lewadniuk had two goals and three points.
After a scoreless opening period, Brayden Schenn opened the scoring in the second, which was a penalty filled affair. The third period was one that gives coaches headaches and saw the two teams combine for seven of the eight goals.
"It was different but it was a big win for our team to take a 2-0 series lead," Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post game show. "There were times tonight where we did things very much how we wanted to and there were certainly some mistakes made int eh third period where we weren't as good defensively."
Defenceman Travis Hamonic also scored for Brandon while Cody Eakin, Justin Dowling and Stepan Novotny replied for the Broncos, who were outshot 41-23.
The series will resume with games three and four in Regina on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Broncos are playing their first round playoff games in the Brandt Centre due to the World Women's Curling Championship is taking place at the Credit Union I-Plex.
