Wheat Kings Double the Royals to Win 10th Straight
January 24, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - Make it ten straight wins for the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Luka Burzan scored twice and netminder Jiri Patera turned aside 45 shots as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the visiting Victoria Royals 6-3 at Westoba Place.
With the win, the Wheat Kings improved to 25-17-1-2 to move to within two points of the second place Winnipeg ICE in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division. They also kept pace with Prince Albert, who regained top spot in the division by edging the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-2 Friday night.
Brandon jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead on goals by Burzan, Cole Reinhardt, Lynden McCallum and Ridly Grieg, chasing Royals starting netminder Shane Farkas.
Two questionable penalty calls in the second however, led to back to back powerplay goals from Victoria's Gary Haden and Kaid Oliver to make it a two goal game through forty minutes.
In the third, defenceman Vincent Iorio's powerplay goal made it 5-2 at the 7:34 mark and Burzan's second of the night five minutes later made it 6-2.
The Royals, who went 3 for 6 with the man advantage, rounded out the scoring when newly acquired Brayden Tracey beat Patera with five to play.
Thanks to tonight's 6-goal effort by the Wheat Kings, who host Lethbridge on Saturday, fans in attendance will save 50% off their online pizza orders at Dominos all day Saturday. As well, they can display their ticket stub and save 6 cents off per litre at all Heritage Co-op gas bars.
Tickets to Saturday night's game against Dylan Cozens, Cale Addison and the Lethbridge Hurricanes go back on sale tomorrow morning at the Keystone Centre box office or by calling (204) 726-3555. However, fans can order tickets online tonight at keystonecentre.com
Saturday night is another Kids Night, presented by the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union. All children's tickets are just $5 for Saturday's game and with the purchase of a discount kids' ticket at the box office, you will receive a "free" McDonalds Happy Meal.
There will also be special concession discounts for the young fans and Jumparoo Inflatables will be on hand for a pre-game party on the main Keystone Centre concourse. Two members of PAW PATROL, including Chase, will also be on hand to meet the children before the game.
Saturday will be the Wheat Kings final home game in two weeks as Brandon hits the road this week for a 4-game Alberta road trip, beginning Tuesday night in Edmonton against the Central Division leading Oil Kings.
