Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB - Brett Hyland's 3-point night still wasn't enough as the Winnipeg Ice storm back to defeat the Wheat Kings 4-3 in overtime.

The game started out well for the Wheat Kings with Brett Hyland scoring the first goal of the 2022/23 season to give Brandon the 1-0 lead. Carson Bjarnason would make several key stops late in the period to keep it 1-0 after one.

The Ice would find a way to even things up in the second period after an Evan Friesen sharp angle shot would sneak through the wickets of Bjarnason with 7:22 remaining in the 2nd. After the Ice scored early in the third period the Wheat Kings would need to turn on the after burners. Blue liner Mason Ward would score the tying goal off a great shot in the slot and then moments later Nolan Ritchie would collect the puck and buzz passed an Ice defender and beat Ice goaltender Daniel Hauser to restore the lead for the Warriors.

Ice forward Josh Medernach scored a pair of goals, one of them with a 1:34 remaining in regulation to force overtime. In overtime, after the Wheat Kings would kill off a penalty, Zack Benson would accept a cross ice feed to beat Bjarnason would only 6.4 seconds remaining in the extra frame.

Wheat Kings were anchored by their 2005 born goaltender Carson Bjarnason who stopped 39 of 45 shots.
