What to Watch for with LouCity at Detroit
August 19, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Louisville City FC is headed to Motown this weekend for its first-ever regular-season matchup with Detroit City FC, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Keyworth Stadium.
While it's the first meeting between the two sides in USL Championship play - Detroit joined the league this year - the boys in purple will not be stepping into unfamiliar territory. LouCity defeated Detroit City last May at Keyworth in the U.S. Open Cup's Round of 32, edging past its host in penalties.
This time around, LouCity (16-3-4, 52 points) is riding a nine-game unbeaten streak that has spanned two months. The boys in purple last lost on June 5 at Tampa Bay and exacted revenge on the Rowdies this past Saturday, topping them 1-0 in front of a club-record 14,673 fans at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville.
An expansion team that joined the league this year, Detroit City (10-5-9, 39 points) currently holds sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Le Rogue drew the Oakland Roots, 1-1, this past weekend and defeated Birmingham Legion FC, 2-1, on Wednesday, keeping its hold on a playoff spot.
LouCity and Detroit will face off again later this season at Lynn Family Stadium on Oct. 5.

The game will air live locally on WBKI and ESPN Louisville's 680/105.7, with streaming via ESPN+ and the WDRB Now app.

Story lines...
Off to the races: The three points LouCity gained on Saturday proved to be important ones as Memphis 901 FC is now chasing the boys in purple (52 points) for first place in the Eastern Conference. The four-point edge gained over the weekend is now at just one, as second-place Memphis (51 points) cut the lead to just one point with a mid-week win over New Mexico United. With 11 regular-season matches to go, Louisville City trails only San Antonio FC (56) in the hunt for the USL Championship's best overall record.
In the stands: A club-record 14,673 fans witnessed Saturday's 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay. The first-ever sellout crowd in Lynn Family Stadium's brief three-season history eclipsed City's previous attendance record of 14,456, which was set at the 2017 USL Championship final at Louisville Slugger Field.
Lockdown defense: A cornerstone of LouCity's success this season, its defense shined in the win against Tampa Bay. The back line of Manny Perez, Wes Charpie, Sean Totsch and Amadou Dia didn't allow a single shot on target for the Rowdies, a first for that club in its last 65 games. LouCity also held possession for 62% of the game, holding Tampa Bay to just 38%, 14 percentage points below its season average.
He's a keeper: Kyle Morton secured his 10th clean sheet of the season on Saturday, good for second in the league. With 11 games to go, Morton is also chasing the USL Championship's single-season shutout record set by Ottawa Fury keeper Maxine Crepeau in 2018 with 15. As a team, LouCity has 12 clean sheets, tied for the best total in the league.
Team of the Week: Fullback Manny Perez earned USL Championship Team of the Week honors for his performance against Tampa Bay. The defender led the match in duels won (16), possession won (12), tackles won (5) and fouls won (3). The selection was Perez's fourth time making Team of the Week.
Wilson wows: Forward Wilson Harris brought his team-best goal tally to 10 Saturday, making him the youngest City player to score in the double digits at just 22 years old. Coincidentally, Harris got his goal in almost identical fashion to the win on Aug. 6 against the Charleston Battery when he stole the ball from a defender just outside the box and scored. Harris is approaching his personal record for goals in a season after he scored 12 in 2019 for Sporting Kansas City II.
Count on Corben: With an injury suffered by midfielder Niall McCabe during warmups last weekend, Corben Bone started against Tampa Bay and served as captain. The midfielder was essential for the team with a 98% passing accuracy, 93% passing accuracy in the final third, five possessions won and two chances created.
