January 7, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- With a New Year comes a new baseball season, which is right around the corner and now is the time to heat things up. The Connecticut Defenders will host a Hot Stove Dinner & Silent Auction Event featuring New York's WFAN 660AM's & XM/Sirius Radio's Ed Randall on Thursday, January 29th, all to benefit the Mayor's Pantry, the team announced today.

"This event will encompass two of our favorite things, talking baseball, especially at a time when we need it the most and helping our community," said Defenders General Manager Charlie Dowd. "The bleak days of winter are a great time for doing both."

The event will be held at the Wauregan Ballroom in Downtown Norwich from 6-9pm. The silent auction will feature a fine collection of sports memorabilia and monies generated from the auction will be donated in full to the Mayor's Pantry, a regional non-profit organization that feeds the less fortunate. The Defenders will also contribute a portion of the ticket sales to the pantry.

Ed Randall, the featured key note speaker is most notably known for his long running radio/television show "Talking Baseball with Ed Randall," on New York's WFAN 660AM and XM/Sirius Radio. Randall was also the television voice of the Staten Island Yankees, Class Short A Affiliate of the New York Yankees on the YES Network. In 2003, a cancer survivor, he established "Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure," a charity dedicated to the twin propositions of raising awareness about and research funds for prostate cancer. It is about to be designated as an Official Charitable Partner of Minor League Baseball.

"There is nobody in baseball with a better rolodex than Ed Randall. He has turned being a good guy and establishing relationships into an impressive broadcast career. His on-air work in both television and radio is unparalleled and his love and knowledge of the game of baseball is deep. Equally as impressive is the fervor with which he has thrown himself into the battle against Prostate Cancer. A survivor himself, Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure has made remarkable strides in its brief existence as Ed has brought the entire sports world into his fight against this scourge," said Dowd.

Additional sports figures from the area will be on hand to meet and greet guests.

Tickets for event are just $40 and must be purchased in advance. Fans attending will be treated to a night of dinner, celebrity interviews and Defenders fun.
