West Michigan Thunderhawks Release 2010 Schedule

December 17, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
West Michigan Thunderhawks News Release

Grand Rapids, Michigan - The West Michigan ThunderHawks of the Indoor Football League announced their much-anticipated 2010 regular season schedule today. Highlights of the 14-game slate include three consecutive home dates to start the team's fourth campaign and the renewal of a bitter rivalry with the Chicago Slaughter, former competitors from the Continental Indoor Football League.

The ThunderHawks will start and end the season versus the Maryland Maniacs with a home game at the DeltaPlex Arena on Friday, February 26th and a trip to Upper Marlboro, Maryland on Saturday, June 19th. The season-opener will mark West Michigan's debut at the 4,400 seat facility after calling the L.C. Walker Arena in nearby Muskegon its home for the past three years.

After the team's first encounter with the Maniacs, ThunderHawks head coach Rod Miller will have plenty of time to assess his squad with two straight open weeks. The Rochester (New York) Raiders will then pay back-to-back visits to Michigan's left coast, returning the favor for a pair of treks out East by the ThunderHawks last season.

Along with Rochester, Maryland and Richmond (Virginia) will make two appearances each in Grand Rapids while Green Bay pays a single visit. It will be a different story on the road where the ThunderHawks will travel to seven different destinations including all four home opponents as well as La Crosse (Wisconsin), Chicago and Bloomington (Illinois).

West Michigan will play seven of its first ten games at home and counting bye weeks, will only have to travel three times in the first 13 weeks. After that, the frequent rider miles pile up with the final four games abroad in successive weeks.

Last season's longest bus ride took West Michigan 785 miles across the plains of South Dakota to take on the Sioux Falls Storm. This year, they will make a nearly identical 745-mile, 12-hour, one-way commute southeast to Richmond.

The IFL is the largest professional indoor football league with a national base of teams from 16 different states ranging from Alaska to New York and Michigan to Texas. In 2010, 26 teams will be competing for a spot in the 2010 United Bowl.
