Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - It's a bird! It's a plane! It's the first-place Chicago Steel (23-4-1-0, 47 pts) back in action on home ice to face off against the Dubuque Fighting Saints (20-6-1-0, 41 pts) on Fri., Jan. 10 with a 7:05 pm puck drop for Superheroes Night at Fox Valley Ice Arena!
Kids 12 and under can receive a ticket, 20th Season drawstring backpack and a free Raising Cane's kids combo card for just $10 as part of Raising Cane's Kids Day.
The theme night includes promotions throughout the evening, including a full-crowd participation game to test Superhero knowledge and a pair of lucky Steel fans will be selected to participate in the "Ironman Game," a competition that tests mouth-eye coordination. The Budweiser Shootout will give contestants a chance to show off their super-skills on ice during the second intermission for an opportunity to win a Busch Light-branded smoker.
The Dubuque Fighting Saints bring the Eastern Conference's second-best winning percentage (.759) into Friday night's clash, trailing only the Steel who own the top winning percentage in the USHL (.839) this season.
Chicago has won its last nine games, a season-high win streak, and Steel forward Sam Colangelo was named the USHL Forward of the Week on Tuesday. Colangelo enters the weekend home-and-home set coming off his first-career hat trick and season-best four-point game (3G, 1A) in a 7-2 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
Erik Portillo backstops a Fighting Saints squad that has given up the fewest goals-allowed (2.41) per game this season. The netminder from Goteborg, Sweden, was selected in the third round (67th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres and represented his country at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship helping the team to a Bronze Medal. This season, Portillo has posted a 12-2-1-0 record with a 2.05 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.
Ty Jackson (10G, 24A) and Dylan Jackson (13G, 20A) lead the offense for Dubuque and both sit in the top-five in the league in points as of Jan. 8. Forward Reise Gaber has tallied 19 goals in 26 contests for the Fighting Saints, the second-most in the league thus far.
Following the Friday faceoff, both teams travel to Dubuque, Iowa, for the second half of the two-game set on Sat., Jan. 11.
After the home-and-home against the Fighting Saints, Chicago hosts the Omaha Lancers for two contests at Fox Valley Ice Arena as the team celebrates 20 seasons with a throwback to the year 2000. Fri., Jan. 17 is a 2000 Throwback Night and the weekend features a 2000 Rusty Bobblehead Giveaway (first 500 fans) on Sat., Jan. 18.
