Dubois County Bombers News Release
HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - The Western Division-leading Terre Haute Rex visit the first-half Western Division-winning Dubois County Bombers this weekend for a three-game series at League Stadium.
It starts with a doubleheader on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. (Gates open at 5:45.)
This series is a possible playoff preview - the Bombers will host the second half division winner for a playoff game on August 7 - and offers fans the chance to see some of the Prospect League's best players.
For the Rex, Michael Schroeder leads the team in runs-batted-in (42) and doubles (16), good for third and second in the PL, respectively. A native of Crown Point, Ind., Schroeder is technically a pitcher, but he has hit .276 in 41 games, pitching, playing first base and outfield, and being used as a designated hitter. He's a left-handed thrower and batter, and he sports a 4.05 ERA in 20 innings pitched.
Kyle Kempf, from Evansville, Ind., is another offensive force for the Rex, carrying a .388 average through 41 games that's good for second in the PL. A good defensive outfielder, Kempf's speed is quite the asset, helping him steal 18 bases. He's also adept at getting on base: Kempf has walked 22 times and struck out only 20 times.
The Rex boast more than simply quality bats, though. Tommy Strunc, a right-handed pitcher from Highlands Ranch, Col., is 4-2 with a 2.10 ERA (sixth in the PL) through 51.1 innings pitched (third in the league). He's appeared in 10 games, eight of them starts. Strunc's 53 strikeouts are second in the league.
Another high-caliber arm is Kyle Zimmerman, whose 49 strikeouts are fourth in the PL. Hailing from Frankfort, Mich., the left-handed pitching, right-handed swinging Zimmerman has started eight games and maintained a 3.45 ERA through 47 innings. He has walked only 19 batters.
Zimmerman has also appeared in 31 games as a hitter, hitting .281 while primarily playing first base.
The Bombers have their own ace starter in Alex Britt (from Salisbury, N.C.). He's 4-1 with a 1.97 ERA (fourth in the PL) through 50.1 innings pitched (fourth in the league). Britt has been Dubois County's most consistent starter this season, and he's fresh off a three-hit, 10-strikeout shutout of the Springfield Sliders on July 17.
Leading the way out of the bullpen for the Bombers is Nick Green, whose six saves are tied for third in the league. All the way from Salt Lake City, Utah, Green has a 2.59 ERA through 24.1 innings pitched and carries a 2-1 record. Green has often been asked to throw multiple innings at the end of games, and he's only blown three saves. He also boasts an impressive pickoff move that discourages the few runners he allows from trying to swipe a base.
Offensively, Landon Curry (from Uniondale, Ind.) is one of Dubois County's engines. Used almost exclusively in the leadoff spot, Curry's .321 average through 35 games leads the Bombers, and his 22 stolen bases are first in the league. Curry's speed is also an asset in the outfield, where he's run down numerous fly balls.
Anchoring the Bombers is catcher Kolin Conner. Hailing from Indianapolis, Conner has thrown out numerous base runners and called most of the games from behind home plate. He's contributed offensively, too, hitting .292 through 31 games. Conner's five home runs lead the Bombers, as do his 29 runs-batted-in. He has hit two grand slams this year as well.
All of the players described above made the 2012 Prospect League All-Star Game. When the Bombers host the Rex this weekend, there is sure to be some quality, playoff-caliber baseball.
Those fans who do come out will be treated to more than a playoff preview, however. Saturday's doubleheader (two 7-inning games in which the first one starts at 6:15 and the gates open at 5:45 p.m.) features two-dollar drafts all night. There will also be contests and games, the prizes for which include a souvenir baseball and pen (to get autographs) and two tickets to the August 7 playoff game.
Sunday's 6:15 game will be two dollars off all tickets, so general admission is only three dollars and the orange-backed and red-backed chairs are five and six dollars, respectively.
