Columbus Cottonmouths News Release


COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Cottonmouths took two of three games over the past weekend, dropping a 5-3 decision at Fayetteville on Friday night before claiming a pair of home wins, 4-3 against the Mississippi RiverKings on Saturday night and a 3-0 win Sunday afternoon versus Augusta. This week, the Snakes have a Friday game on the road at Pensacola and a Saturday night home game against the Huntsville Havoc. Both games will be broadcast on America One Networks with both a video and audio feed, with a nominal fee for each game. A free audio-only webcast of the games is also available. UPCOMING GAMES AND PROMOTIONS

Friday, February 15 - Columbus at Pensacola, 8:05 PM EST (Season Series vs. PEN: 3-2-1)

The Cottonmouths make their fourth trip in as many weeks to Pensacola on Friday night to take on the Ice Flyers. Pensacola currently sits just three points ahead of the Cottonmouths in third place but have two games in hand on Columbus and is just one point behind second-place Fayetteville with three games in hand on the FireAntz. Pensacola is tied with first-place Louisiana with the fewest regulation losses in the league with 10. The Snakes have taken two of three from the Ice Flyers at their home Pensacola Bay Center, but the `Flyers emerged victorious in the last meeting there between the two teams on February 1 in a 5-4 decision over Columbus. The Snakes still have two more visits to Pensacola on the schedule after Friday night with games February 24 and March 19; the Ice Flyers visit the Snake Pit only once more this season in the next-to-last regular season game on Marc h 22.

Saturday, February 16 - Huntsville at Columbus, 7:30 PM EST (Season Series vs. HSV: 2-0-1)

The Huntsville Havoc make their final visit of the regular season to the Snake Pit on Saturday night. The Cottonmouths have taken five of a possible six points in the season series against the Havoc, but the last two games in the series have been decided in overtime. The Snakes have yet to visit the Von Braun Center in Huntsville for a game and will only do so twice, with scheduled games on February 23 and March 7.

PROMOTIONS: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders! The cheerleaders will be around to sign autographs and perform on the ice, with special meet and greet and Q & A session passes still available for purchase through the Cottonmouths office.

COTTONMOUTHS WEEK IN REVIEW

Friday, February 8 - Columbus 3 at Fayetteville 5 (Attendance: 5,176)

Josh McQuade's hat trick propelled the Fayetteville FireAntz to a 5-3 win over the Cottonmouths Friday night at the Crown Coliseum. The win spoiled a two-goal night by Sam Bowles, with Mark Thorburn also lighting the lamp once for Columbus. Ian Vigier took the loss between the pipes for the Snakes with 26 saves on 30 FireAntz shots (Fayetteville's last goal was of the empty net variety) with Marco Emond turning aside 28 of 31 shots on goal in the winning effort in net for Fayetteville. Both teams scored once on the power play as Columbus was 1 for 3 with the man advantage and the FireAntz were 1 for 4.

Saturday, February 9 - Mississippi RiverKings 3 at Columbus 4 (Attendance: 3,471)

The Snakes came back from a 2-0 first period deficit Saturday night at home to take a 4-3 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings. Four different Cottonmouths tallied goals with Jordan Braid, Tom Maldonado, and Mark Thorburn all scoring once each and Derek Pallardy notching the game-winning goal. Braid led all scorers with a three-point night as he also logged two assists. Andrew Loewen picked up the win in net for Columbus with 34 saves on 37 shots on goal; he now has a whopping nine-game winning streak in his last nine games in goal dating back to December 31. The RiverKings' David Wilson took the loss between the pipes for Mississippi with 35 saves on 39 shots. The `Kings were 1 for 4 on the power play while the Snakes were 0 for 2 with the man advantage.

Sunday, February 10 - Augusta 0 at Columbus 3 (Attendance: 1,417)

All the scoring in the game came in the first period and all by the Snakes in a 3-0 shutout victory over the Augusta RiverHawks. Marcel Alvarez, Sam Bowles, and Matt Gingera all scored once each for the Snakes. Andrew Loewen picked up his third shutout of the season, stopping all 25 RiverHawks shots on goal he faced. Augusta's Nick Niedert took the loss with 26 saves on 29 shots. Columbus was 1 for 5 on the power play while holding Augusta scoreless in their five chances with the man advantage.

THREE STARS OF THE WEEK

1. G Andrew Loewen - Loewen notched his third shutout of the season Sunday against Augusta and also picked up a win Saturday night in net against the RiverKings. Loewen made a total of 69 saves on 72 shots over the weekend.

2. F Sam Bowles - Bowles logged a pair of goals Friday night in Fayetteville, an assist on Saturday against the RiverKings, and a goal Sunday against Augusta.

3. F Mark Thorburn - Thorburn scored a goal on Friday and Saturday night and logged two assists Sunday.
