Week 2 Friday Night Matchup Between BattleWings and Sharks

April 4, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release

Friday night's lone af2 affair features Corpus Christi traveling to Bossier City, La. to take on the BattleWings in an early season Southwest Division matchup. Last week the Sharks earned a 61-48 road win at Austin to get their season off to a positive start. The victory was actually the team's fifth in a row dating back to 2007 when Corpus Christi finished with four straight wins. The Sharks outscored Austin 34-0 in the third quarter last week to turn a 28-13 halftime deficit into a 47-28 advantage entering the fourth quarter en route to the victory. The team was led by WR BRANDON HUSSEY and DB/KR IVORY MCCANN. Hussey caught 11 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns while McCann registered 4.5 tackles and four pass breakups and 196 all-purpose yards. McCann scored two touchdowns as well (8-yard TD run, 57-yard KR TD). QB FRAN JOHNSON finished 19-of-29 for 180 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Bossier-Shreveport (No. 10 in latest Coaches Poll) is looking to reverse their fortunes from a week ago with their second straight game at the CenturyTel Center. The BattleWings lost a heartbreaker in Week 1 to Central Valley, 55-54, as K CHRIS BENNICE missed a 28-yard field goal attempt on the last play of the game. Bossier-Shreveport actually led after three quarters by 13 points, 54-41, but failed to score in the final 15 minutes. Four turnovers (three fumbles, one INT) and a sputtering offense in the second half doomed the BattleWings. QB GARY COOPER was a bright spot for Bossier-Shreveport with 282 yards passing with seven touchdowns and one interception. WR CHAVIS MCCOLLISTER was the team's top pass catcher with 10 receptions for 124 yards and four touchdowns. McCollister had trouble holding onto the ball in the second half, however, fumbling twice to give the ball back to Central Valley. DB PHILLIP GEIGGAR led the BattleWings defense with six tackles and the team's lone interception of the night. Bossier-Shreveport currently owns a 2-0 series advantage on the Sharks with the team's two wins in 2007 coming by an average of 40.5 points. Corpus Christi, however, has improved a great deal since then. Despite the Sharks' better play, the BattleWings have an opportunity to even their record this week at 1-1 if they protect the football.
