Week 19 USL-1 Honors announced

August 28, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced Monday its USL First Division Team of the Week for the 19th week of the season, honoring Romario of Miami as the USL First Division Player of the Week.

With his hat-trick two weeks ago, it looked as though Seattle rookie Cam Weaver was going to pull away for the scoring championship, but Brazilian World Cup MVP Romario fired back this week with four goals and an assist in leading his side to 2-1 and 7-1 wins over Atlanta to put them in control of their own destiny in the playoff chase while pulling himself within one point and one goal of Weaver in the two scoring tables.

Romario set the tone 22 minutes into the first meeting between the two sides Friday in Atlanta with the opening strike on a corner as Diego Walsh went on to score the first of three on the weekend in the 65th for what proved the winner.

Two nights later in South Florida, Romario took a 2-0 lead and made it 6-0 I a span of 25 minutes. He headed home a cross from Jamil Jean-Jacques to move to 15 goals on the year. Four minutes into the second half Romario set up Sean Fraser for his second goal of the night. Fraser then returned the favor two-fold, finding Romario in the 55th and 59th minutes for a hat-trick to put him within striking distance of Weaver with both having three games remaining on the year.

It was Romario's second hat-trick of the campaign, posting three in a 5-3 win over Seattle in June.
