Week 11 af2 Saturday night matchups

June 8, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (8-0) at South Georgia Wildcats (7-2)

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - Albany Civic Center (8,034) 7:30 P.M. ET

The undefeated Pioneers, ranked No. 1 in the Coaches Poll, head to South Georgia this week to battle the No.2-ranked Wildcats in what should be a top-flight af2 matchup. W-B/Scranton and South Georgia have met five times in the past, with the Pioneers leading the series 4-1. W-B/Scranton enters Week 11 well rested after a bye week in Week 10. The Pioneers most recent result was a 71-46 home win against Albany in Week 9. W-B/Scranton's is a well-balanced team on both sides. Offensively, the team leader is veteran QB RYAN VENA. He leads the league in passer rating (129.6) and completion percentage (70.0) and is one of the big reasons behind the team's undefeated first half. Other strong Pioneer offensive players include WR/DB TERENCE GLOVER, who leads the team in rushing and WR TYREAK SAVIOUR, who leads the team in receiving yards. Saviour had five catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns against Albany. Adding to the Pioneers potent offense is WR BUCHIE IBEH. Ibeh, who spent time in the AFL this year with the Chicago Rush, had six catches for 100 yards and three scores in Week 9. The team's defense is led by DB CHRIS ROYAL. The rookie from Marshall has played like a veteran in his first season, leading the squad in tackles (57.0) and interceptions (6). DL DOUG HARDING leads the team in sacks with 4.0. The Wildcats come to this week's contest on the strength of a four-game winning streak. Last week South Georgia held off the Corpus Christi Sharks, 46-44. South Georgia's strength lies in its offense. The unit ranks second in total offense in the league standings. Veteran QB D. BRYANT leads the cast. Bryant currently ranks second in the af2 in touchdown passes (50) and passing yards (2,426). In the last week's win, he completed threw for 219 yards and four touchdowns, connecting with four different receivers. WR SCOTT CLOMAN had his best game of 2007, collecting all four of Bryant's passing scores on his way to finishing with 11 catches for 173 yards. WR CHAVIS MCCOLLISTER leads the team in total receiving yards with 74 catches for 849 yards and 13 scores this season. Leading the Wildcats on defense are DBs DARYON BRUTLEY (44.0 tackles, 5 INTs) and MATT JACKSON (5 INTs, 13.5 tackles in 4 games) and OL/DL JOE WOOLRIDGE (16.0 tackles; 5.5 sacks). This much anticipated matchup of No. 1 vs. No. 2 should be as good as advertised. South Georgia hopes their home field advantage (5-0) and high-octane offense are enough to show the Pioneers their first loss of the season.

AMARILLO DUSTERS (1-7) AT OKLAHOMA CITY YARD DAWGZ (5-3)

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - Ford Center (17,884) 8:00 P.M. ET

The Dusters are out to put a stop to their losing streak this week when they travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Yard Dawgz in a Central Division affair. Amarillo and Oklahoma City have met six times previously, including once earlier this season, ending in a slim Yard Dawgz win, 59-55. Oklahoma City leads the series, 4-2. Amarillo has struggled to find a winning formula since the team's season-opening win. The Dusters have lost seven straight games. Five of the team's seven losses, however, have come by eight points or less. Amarillo comes into this week's contest well rested after a bye in Week 10. The Dusters most recent result was a 49-44 loss at Rio Grande Valley in Week 9. QB STEVE PANELLA has been the team's top offensive talent to date. Panella, a veteran who has stayed healthy this season, has 42 total touchdowns (30 passing, 12 rushing) and has thrown for over 1,800 yards (1,821). He ranks second in the league in rushing TDs with 12. Panella threw for 331 yards and six touchdowns (3 INTs) in the Dusters' Week 9 defeat. On the receiving end, WR STEVE BERGESKI leads the team with 59 catches for 771 yards and 18 touchdowns, three of which came against the Dorados. On the defensive side of the ball, DB JAHMAL FENNER leads the team in total tackles with 33.0, while DL NALA SALUNI leads the team in sacks with 2.0. The Yard Dawgz enter Week 11 ranked No. 8 in the Coaches Poll. Oklahoma City recorded its third straight win last week against Laredo last week, 57-41. The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City offense is led by QB STAN HILL, who is also highly ranked individually in the league passer rankings. Hill has thrown for 2,189 yards this season with 41 touchdowns. He tossed seven touchdowns in the victory against the Lobos. WR DANNY HOWARD leads the team in receiving (61-854; 18 TDs) and is tied for the team lead in rushing yards with 41. In defeating the Lobos, Howard caught six passes for 53 yards and four scores. Another important player for the Yard Dawgz is versatile veteran WR/DB AL HUNT. Hunt is the team's second-best receiver (42-590; 13 TDs) and is tied for the team lead in rushing TDs (4). In addition to their strong offense, the Yard Dawgz are ranked ninth in total defense. DB JON HOLLAND leads the team in total tackles with 60.0 for the season. LB AARON CHAVERS has a team-high 5.5 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss. Chavers was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after his three-sack showing against the Lobos in Week 10. The Dusters need a win, but face another tough challenge this week against the highly-ranked Yard Dawgz on their home turf.

TULSA TALONS (8-1) AT CORPUS CHRISTI SHARKS (1-7)

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - American Bank Center (7,498) 8:00 P.M. ET

The Talons travel to Texas this week to take on the Sharks on Saturday night. Tulsa and Corpus Christi have not previously met. The Talons enter Week 11 after a strong 75-50 road win last week against Manchester. The Talons overcame the Wolves in a high-scoring affair thanks to a solid offense and opportunistic defense. QB JUSTIN ALLGOOD completed 16-of-24 passes for 203 yards and six touchdowns, connecting with four different receivers. WR/DB JERMAINE LANDRUM came up big for the Talons, with six receptions for 82 yards and three touchdowns. WR ANDRE FORDE, WR JEFF HUGHLEY, and WR DON MCGEE also connected with Allgood for one touchdown. Along with their strong offense, the Talons' defense is also impressive. Tulsa is currently ranked fifth in total defense. DB DELENELL REID currently leads a well-balance unit in total tackles (43.5), interceptions (5), and pass breakups (18). The Talons' combination of a strong offense and defense could prove to be a challenge for Corpus Christi. The Sharks enter this week's contest after a narrow defeat by South Georgia in Week 10, 46-44. Leading the Sharks effort was QB JOHN DE LOS SANTOS, passing for 27-of-51 for 272 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Trailing by 22 points with just over six minutes to play, Corpus Christi showed tremendous fight by scoring three times in the final two and a half minutes. A failed two-point conversion with two seconds left, however, sealed the Sharks fate. WR/DB BRANDON HUSSEY, who leads the team in receiving (64-635; 8 TDs), had 10 catches for 123 yards and one touchdown against South Georgia. WR STEVE SMITH added to the Sharks effort with five catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns, as did WR IKE CHEWKA who recorded 10 catches for 78 yards and one score. He also had a fumble recovery TD. Defensively, Corpus Christi is led by DB ANDRE KING (team-high 30.5 tackles) and OL/DL ESTUS HOOD, who leads the team in sacks with 3.5. The Sharks must step up their offensive game this week if they hope to keep things close against the talented Talons.

TEXAS COPPERHEADS (2-7) AT RIO GRANDE VALLEY DORADOS (7-1)

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - Dodge Arena (5,500) 8:30 P.M. ET

The Rio Grande Valley Dorados are out to keep their grip on the Southwest Division lead on Saturday when they host the Texas Copperheads. Texas will face a challenge this week when they face the highly-ranked Dorados. The Copperheads are coming off a 64-21 loss to Bossier-Shreveport in Week 10 in which Battle Wings QB GARY COOPER threw for 210 yards and six touchdowns. Copperheads QB KENTON EVANS completed 11-of-27 passes for 165 yards and three scores in his second start with the team. Return specialist JARROD FULLER, who was named the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game, twisted and turned his way for 203 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. DB TORRY JOUBERT, who recorded 5.5 tackles for the night, led the Texas defense. WR/LB RANDY CHAPPELL also contributed with 4.5 tackles. Chappell leads the squad in stops with 32.5 on the season. K NICK GATTO is currently tied for first in the league with 10 field goals made. Rio Grande Valley, currently ranked No. 4 in the Coaches Poll, is well rested after enjoying a bye week in Week 10. The Dorados are hoping to improve their winning streak to six games. QB JOSH KELLETT led the team to a 49-44 comeback win against Amarillo on May 25, setting a new franchise record with 29 pass completions. Kellett's seven TD passes fell one short of a second franchise record. He was supported offensively by WR COCO BLALOCK, who led the Dorados with four touchdowns, and WR/LB GEORGE WILLIAMS, who led the team with 14 catches and 156 yards. Blalock leads the team with 47 catches and 522 yards for the season. Williams leads the league with 129.8 receiving yards per game as well as scoring average (21.6 points per game). WR/DB CHRIS CANTY leads the team in tackles, with 28.5, and interceptions, with four. He continued his strong play of late with two interceptions and 5.5 tackles against Amarillo. OL/DL TOLIFILI LIAFAU added 2.0 sacks. He's currently tied for second in the league in sacks with 8.0. As a team, the Dorados lead the league in sacks with 28 on the season. Rio Grande Valley is currently 3-1 at home while Texas is 0-4 on the road. The Copperheads will need to protect their quarterback from the imposing Rio Grande Valley rush in order to keep pace with the Dorados.

FLORIDA FIRECATS (6-3) AT TENNESSEE VALLEY VIPERS (4-5)

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - Von Braun Center (6,642) 8:30 P.M. ET

The Florida Firecats (No. 6 in Coaches Poll) travel to Huntsville, Ala. this week for the rubber match between these two South Division foes. Each team has won once on the road. The Firecats defeated the Vipers in Week 3 at the Von Braun Center, 61-34, and Tennessee Valley upended Florida at Germain Arena in Week 5, 39-38. In nine all-time meetings, Florida owns the series advantage, 5-4. The Firecats most recent result was a 29-21 win over Alabama in Week 10. The Firecats' defense came up with their biggest play of the game on Alabama's final drive, as WR/DB KRIS THOMAS intercepted an errant Mitch Tanney pass to preserve the victory with 20 seconds to play. US Army Ironman of the Game WR/LB CHRIS MCKINNEY had 10 catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns. McKinney received the Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 10 as a result of his 18-yard catch resulting in a touchdown. QB CHRIS WALLACE completed 22-of-34 passes for 207 yards on the night. Wallace is currently fourth in the league in completion percentage at 63.4 percent. WR/DB LEVY BROWN is a strong defensive force for the Firecats. He leads the league in tackles with 70.0 on the season and leads the squad in interceptions with seven. Brown recorded 5.0 tackles against the Steeldogs. OL/DL KEITH DRAYTON (team-high 6.5 sacks) is a player to watch out for up front. As a team, Florida is tied for No. 1 overall in scoring defense, limited its opponents to just 34.8 points per contest. The Tennessee Valley Vipers also rely on a tough defense. The Vipers are ranked sixth overall as a defense, limiting their opposition to just 40.8 points per game. Unfortunately, Tennessee Valley's offense has been hard to find. They currently rank 26 out of 30 teams in offensive output, scoring just 35.7 points per game. The Vipers, who have lost three straight, hope to find an offensive flow against the formidable Firecats. Tennessee Valley's most recent game came last week at Quad City where the team fell short at The Mark, 45-22. QB RYAN PORTER earned two touchdowns and 16 completions in his second game with Tennessee Valley, but threw three interceptions in the loss. WR JOEL BABB was a favored target for Porter, finishing the game with six receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown, while WR/DB TRAVIS BLANCHARD notched six receptions for 88 yards. Defensively, the Vipers leaned on WR/DB TROY GRAHAM, who posted a game-high 6.5 tackles and one interception. Graham leads the team in tackles with 45.5. Expect this game to be another defensive battle.

SPOKANE SHOCK (6-3) AT BAKERSFIELD BLITZ (4-4)

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - Rabobank Arena (4,500) 10:00 P.M. ET

The Spokane Shock (No. 9 in Coaches Poll) will take on the Bakersfield Blitz (No. 15) for the second time this season, hoping to come out on top the second time around. The two West Division teams competed on May 12 in Spokane and the Blitz earned a 44-28 win. Bakersfield held the Shock scoreless in the second half thanks to a stifling defensive effort which forced two turnovers and two stops on downs. Spokane will enter Rabobank Arena a week after defeating Everett, 52-47 on June 2. The Shock are currently riding a three-game winning streak. WR ANTWONE SAVAGE was a strong influence in the win, recording 179 yards with 14 completions with four touchdowns. This high caliber of play earned him Schutt Offensive Player of the Week Award. He was the only player to score in the fourth quarter of the game from either team. Savage is among the league's top receivers with 994 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns. QB ANDRICO HINES played another strong game under center for Spokane against Everett, completing 20-of-27 passes for 233 yards and five touchdowns (one INT). WR/DB ALEX TEEMS contributed 6.5 tackles in the contest, improving his team-high total to 48.5 tackles for the season. OL/DL DEVON PARKS and OL/DL KATON BETHAY each recorded one sack in the game. Parks was selected as the ADT Defensive Player of the Game. DB ROB KEEFE can't be overlooked as well. The veteran team leader sparks the Shock secondary with a team-best six interceptions. Bakersfield hit the midway point at 4-4, and hopes to reach above .500 coming off a bye week. Last time the Blitz took the field they lost a tough 66-61 decision at Everett in Week 9. WR TYRONE BAISDEN helped Bakersfield hold on throughout the second half, tying the game at 48 with a 10-yard touchdown reception with 11:09 left to play. Baisden recorded six receptions for 47 yards and two scores while WR RENNARD REYNOLDS had 17 catches for 130 yards and six touchdowns. Reynolds leads the team with 67 catches, 839 receiving yards and 22 TDs on the season. Bakersfield was supported defensively by FB NICK ONAINDIA, who finished with 6.0 tackles. OL/DL IBOK IBOK and DL MAURICE TROUTMAN each earned one sack in the game. Troutman ranks among the league leaders in sacks with 7.5. WR/DB NATHAN MUNSON (7 INTs, 622 kick return yards) and WR/DB DERONN FINLEY (700 all-purpose yards, 9 TDs) are also dangerous playmakers for the Blitz. This should be another classic West battle between these two teams who are jockeying for position at or near the top of the West Division.

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - Selland Arena (5,487) 10:00 P.M. ET

The Central Valley Coyotes host the Lubbock Renegades this Saturday at Selland Arena in the first meeting these two squads. The Renegades will take the field hoping to expand on their two-game win streak. Lubbock is coming off its best win of the season, a 51-49 road victory last Saturday at Arkansas. The Twisters came into the contest at 6-2 and ranked No. 4 in the Coaches Poll. QB ROBERT KENT had his best showing of the year, completing 26-of-38 passes for 365 yards and seven touchdowns with two interceptions. WR/LB JOHN KING finished with seven catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns. WR/LB CHRIS HIGHSHAW leads the team with 31 catches for 405 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on the season. Highshaw recorded seven catches for 87 yards and a score against Arkansas. DB JEROME BRAZIEL and WR/LB PRESTON HARTFIELD each had 5.5 tackles. Hartfield leads the team with 39.0 stops on the season. OL/DL PIERRE COLIN and OL/DL MOQUT RUFFINS each had one sack. Central Valley (No. 16 in Coaches Poll) are coming off a bye in Week 10. The Coyotes last time on the field was a hard-to-swallow 66-63 loss at Spokane in Week 9. They return home after playing their last two games on the road. Central Valley's four losses have all been a bit difficult to take as the team fell short by an average of just 3.3 points per decision. Spokane's KELVIN DICKENS caught an 18-yard pass from QB JUSTIN RUMMELL on the final play of the game to turn back the Coyotes by three. WR TONAE MARTIN ended the game with eight catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Coyotes' QB CLAY GROEFSEMA completed 25-of-39 passes for 304 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Groefsema has had a strong rookie season to date with 58 total TDs (49 passing, 9 rushing). He ranks among the league's top passers in a host of categories, including TD passes, passing yards, total TDs, and completion percentage. His main target in 2007 has been WR JASON BARNES (70-839; 21 TDs). The Coyotes lead the league in scoring, averaging almost 61 points per game (61) points per game and rest at fifth in the league for passing, averaging 274.1 yards per game. Defensively, DL DOUG LAGENFELD leads the squad in sacks with 5.5 and DB AARON MILLER is the team's best cover man with five interceptions and 16 pass breakups. One team will lose, but the fans in attendance will not as this matchup should be an up-and-down the field affair.

BOISE BURN (4-4) AT EVERETT HAWKS (2-7)

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 - Everett Events Center (7,500) 10:30 P.M. ET

The Burn travel to Everett, Wash. this week to battle the Hawks in a Western Division affair. Boise and Everett have met once before, earlier this season, with the Burn coming away with a convincing 70-34 win on their home turf. Boise, however, has cooled down a bit in recent weeks after a hot start to its first season. The Burn, who began the year with four wins in their first five games, have now lost three straight. The team's most recent decision came in Week 9 at home to Stockton, 57-33. Boise's offensive effort was led by QB BART HENDRICKS. Hendricks, however, didn't have his best game, completing just 19-of-41 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. WR/LB CASEY ALLEN contributed largely to the Burn attack with six catches for 73 yards and two scores. WR/DB COLE CLASEN had one rushing TD in addition to collecting nine passes for 112 yards. Defensively, Boise is led by DB SULLIVAN BEARD who had 5.0 tackles against the Lightning and leads the team in total tackles for the season with 51.0. In their losing effort against Stockton, DB LEE MARKS also collected 5.0 tackles. The only sack of the day was made by WR/DB BRANDON HAZENBURG. The Hawks enter this week after a heartbreaking road loss to Spokane last week, 52-47. Everett led by 15 points midway through the third quarter, but a scoreless fourth quarter led to their demise. The Hawks, however, had opportunities to score right up until the final seconds, but the Shock defense bent but did not break. Everett's offense was paced by the tandem of QB JASON CAMPBELL and WR JOSH RICHEY. Campbell completed 18-of-34 passes for 268 yards and seven touchdowns against Spokane, but failed to help Everett get into the end zone in the final 15 minutes. He's accumulated 1,736 yards and 42 touchdowns on the season so far. Richey had four touchdown receptions last week to run his team-leading season totals to 80 catches for 1,003 yards and 23 touchdowns. PHIL GOODMAN and WARREN HOLLOWAY are also two wideouts to watch for on the Hawks. Defensively, DB AARON DUNKLIN is the squad's top playmaker with team-highs in tackles (43.5) and interceptions (4). OL/DL CHUCK JONES and OL/DL JOHNNY JACKSON, who share the team lead for total sacks (6.5), each recorded 1.5 sacks in Week 10. The Hawks may have just two wins, but they've played much better over their last six outings. Despite a lopsided first affair, expect this contest to be a much closer encounter.
