WCL Victoria HabourCats

Weather Shortens Non-League Game

June 22, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

VICTORIA, B.C. - The Victoria HarbourCats fell by a score of 3-2 in five innings in a non-league game against players from the Victoria Mavericks league at a misty Royal Athletic Park on Wednesday night. Wednesday was the HarbourCats 'Salute to Royal Canadian Legion' with members of local legions recognized before the game.

Left-hander Josh Mitchell (Pitt) started on the mound for the HarbourCats, pitching one inning and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits as the Mavericks opened the scoring with a three-run top of the first inning.

The HarbourCats offence came back with two runs in the bottom of the first to get back into the game. Outfielder Matt Lautz (UC Santa Barbara) led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch before outfielder Matt Smith (Sacramento St.) launched a home run to left-center field to cut the Mavericks lead to one.

Both pitching staffs settled in after the wild first inning. The HarbourCats had five different pitchers pitch one inning in the game and four pitchers combined to throw four innings of two-hit shutout relief work, highlighted by left-hander Jack Wolger (UC Berkeley) who struck out the side in order in the top of the fifth.

Unfortunately for the HarbourCats, they were unable to create any offence, going hitless with only one base runner in the final four innings.

Because of the rainy conditions throughout the evening, slippery for players to get their footing on the mound, at the plate, or in the field, the game was called after five innings.

The HarbourCats return to West Coast League regular season play on Friday when the Kitsap Blue Jackets visit Royal Athletic Park to begin a three-game weekend series. The HarbourCats are 11-3 and currently first place in the WCL North Division by three games with 14 games to play in the first half.

With a franchise record 11-game winning streak still alive, the HarbourCats have a chance to tie the WCL record of 14 this weekend, a mark set by the 2011 Wenatchee AppleSox.
