Waza Drop 11-10 Decision to Ohio in Season Opener

Waza Flo News Release

The Detroit Waza dropped their 2010-11 season opener in heartbreaking fashion by an 11-10 score to the Ohio Vortex at the Canton Civic Center this evening.

For the first three quarters the game was virtually even, with the score tied at six with just one quarter left to play. However, the Vortex (1-0) blew the game wide open with three goals early in that final frame, causing the Waza to play catch-up for the remainder of the match. The Waza (0-1) would fight hard, but with every goal for the men from the Motor City, the Vortex would grab one of their own. With just over three minutes to play, the Waza would storm back as a natural hat trick from Dan Dragoi would cut theVortex lead to 11-10. However, the strong effort would come to naught, as a furious last-minute flurry would not be enough to put the tying tally into the net.

"It was a game of inches," said Waza co-head coach Dominic Scicluna. "One inch here or there would have given us the win. However, I think we're heading in the right direction. We clicked in a lot of areas, but we came up short. Tonight's game was a great game to watch, and was a good advertisement for what the Waza can do."

Rodrigo Gonzalez and Dragoi each had a hat trick to lead the Waza in scoring. Dominic Scicluna added two goals, and Niki Djokic and Costea Decu added one tally each. Tony Santilli took the loss in goal for Detroit. Allan Eller led Ohio in scoring with five goals.

The Waza will return to the indoor pitch next weekend with two games. On Friday night, they will face the Louisville Lightning at the Mockingbird Valley Sports Complex in Louisville, and then will head up I-75 to face the Cincinnati Kings on Saturday evening.

The Detroit Waza are charter members of the Professional Arena Soccer League, which is starting it's third season of play. The Waza will open the home portion of their 2010-11 schedule on Sunday, December 5th, when they will host the Cincinnati Kings at the Taylor Sportsplex at 4:30PM.
