Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE (March 19, 2008) - Nearly 6,500 students and teachers from more than 30 schools roared and cheered through this year's final installent of the Milwaukee Wave's School Day exhibitions on Wednesday morning, capping off the third edition of the Making Waves educational initiative.

Making Waves is a three-part program. This year, about 23,000 students will enjoy school assemblies conducted by Wave players. The 45-minute sessions use soccer to impart the lessons of teamwork, hard work and good decision-making. Two Wave-themed newspaper curricula, one for financial literacy and one for Health Education for Youth (HEY!), are produced in conjunction with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and distributed for classroom use. Finally, about 15,000 students and teachers attended the School Day Games at the U.S. Cellular Arena, more than twice as many as in 2006-07. Wednesday's game was a rematch of the Team USA vs. Team World game from February, featuring players from the Wave, the Wave Armada developmental team and other top players from the area. It also was the first Hang Tough School Day Game, where winners from this year's Time Warner Cable anti-drug and anti-violence contests were honored at halftime.

"It's hard to describe the noise inside the arena when the kids are at full throat," said Matt Schroeder, director of public relations for the Wave. "But it's just an indication of just how much this opportunity means to the students, many of whom would not be able to attend a professional soccer game on their own." On the field, Marcio Leite's fifth goal of the game, a 3-pointer, gave Team World an 18-17 win. Three different players scored two goals each for Team USA, including Travis McKenzie, a 2008 draftee of the New Jersey Ironmen whose rights were acquired by the Wave in a trade last month.

The Wave return to regular-season MISL action on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Orlando against the Sharks. Their next home game is at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30 against the Detroit Ignition. Milwaukee and Detroit are tied atop the league with records of 18-7.
