Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (April 17, 2009) - For 10 rugged seasons, Lovelace Ackah patrolled the back line for the Milwaukee Wave. He helped lead the team to three championships with a physical presence that marked the top scorers of his day.
Ackah announces his retirement today, ending his career second on the Wave's all-time list in blocked shots (404) and sixth in games played (304).
"Right now, I feel like the last three years, I didn't play the way I did when I came in," Ackah said. "Your body tells you that you can't produce like you used to."
"I'd first like to thank Love for his dedication, both on and off the field, during his 10 years with the Milwaukee Wave," said Keith Tozer, Wave head coach and vice president of soccer operations. "He was an integral reason why we won the three championships he was involved in. His commitment to the summer camp program and to the youth of Milwaukee was outstanding. We wish him the best."
Ackah, a native of Kumasi, Ghana, debuted with the team in the 1999-2000 season. With 57 shot blocks and 18 points in 39 games, he was chosen to the National Professional Soccer League's All-Rookie team as the Wave won their second world championship.
He was a Major Indoor Soccer League All-Star in 2002, 2003 and 2004, posting a career-best 67 shot blocks in just 34 games in 2004. Throughout his career in Milwaukee, Ackah also was active coaching in the Wave Summer Soccer Camp program.
Ackah is a coach with the Lake Country United soccer club based in Hartland, and he looks forward to continuing his work with young players in the area.
"When I came here, the people and families here around the city treated me really good," Ackah said. "Whatever I did with the Wave, I should pay back to the youth."
