Last Week's Outings:
Wave 10, Blast 4 (03/18/07) - Wearing green but flashing a big red "stop" signal, the Wave shut down the Baltimore Blast 10-4 Sunday at the U.S. Cellular Arena in a Major Indoor Soccer League contest.
The victory - the 500th in the Wave's 23-year history - allowed the Wave (13-13) to keep pace with the Chicago Storm (12-12) for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Wave travels to Chicago at 1 p.m. Saturday for the first of two crucial late-season games with the Storm.
On the seventh annual Green Jersey Day to benefit Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, the Wave posted their second consecutive strong defensive effort on their home field before a vocal crowd of 6,117. With offensive stalwarts Todd Dusosky and Marcio Leite both scratched, the Wave were content to knock the ball around in their back end and dominate possession. It paid off, as the Wave held an opponent under 10 points for the second straight game. When Baltimore did get opportunities, keeper Nick Vorberg came through with some clutch saves to frustrate the defending champs.
"These are the two best games we've played all year, and in a crucial situation," said Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer, lumping last Sunday's 11-7 victory over Philadelphia.
As is their custom, the Wave jumped out on top. Anthony Maher struck first, whirling while on his back to knock home a rebound at the 11:56 mark of the first period. About eight minutes later, captain Michael King fed a left-footed ball off the near boards. It caromed into the penalty area and to the foot of an onrushing Greg Howes, who slammed home is 23rd 2-pointer of the year.
A restart goal early in the second quarter gave Baltimore a little hope, but Marcelo Fontana's left-footed strike at the 4:35 mark restored the four-point cushion, and the Blast would not get any closer.
Howes and Maher each recorded a goal and assist to lead Milwaukee offensively. Lovelace Ackah scored his first goal of the season to help clinch it.
Vorberg, who faced only 13 shots, was especially golden when foiling a 3-on-1 breakout by the Blast late in the second quarter.
Children's Hospital of Wisconsin was the beneficiary of Sunday's Green Jersey Auction, which raised more than $5,000.
