Last Week's Outings:
Wave 6, Ignition 14 (1/12/07)
PLYMOUTH, MI (Jan. 12, 2007) - Keeper Nick Vorberg and the Milwaukee Wave blanked the Detroit Ignition in the first half on Friday, continuing a stretch of excellent defense.
But in the third period at Compuware Arena, the Ignition scored six points in the first 5 minutes and nine overall, on the way to a 14-6 victory over the Wave.
In the teams' first two games this year, on Dec. 9-10, the Wave (6-7) scored 36 points and swept the series. They were less potent on Friday, held to their lowest point total of the season.
The game was the 1,000th of Wave Coach Keith Tozer's indoor career, including post-season play.
Vorberg recorded seven saves in the first period alone to keep the Wave in a scoreless game. Rookie Tyrone Gordon, a graduate of Milwaukee Vincent High School, finally broke through for the Wave with 10:40 remaining in the second quarter. He stole the ball from defender Bill Sedgewick and walked in on keeper Sanaldo.
That's how the half ended, with Milwaukee having given up just six points in the last six quarters. But just 42 seconds into the third quarter, Novi Marojevic scored on an assist from league leading scorer Jamar Beasley, and the Ignition were off and running.
Gordon pulled Milwaukee within 6-4 with his second goal of the game and third of the season with 7:26 left in the period. Another rookie, Marcio Leite, extended his scoring streak to seven games with the assist.
After a 3-point goal by Matt Apple stretched the lead to 9-4, Greg Howes fired in a 2-pointer on a restart with 4:01 remaining in the game. Seconds later, Milwaukee was given a 2-minute penalty for too many men on the field, slowing the Wave's momentum, and the Ignition tallied two late goals.
With his goal, Howes passed teammate Todd Dusosky with 39 points to take over second in the MISL Puma Points standings. Dusosky's 38-game regular season scoring streak came to an end.
Vorberg had 18 saves for Milwaukee.
Wave 14, Ignition 17(1/14/07)
MILWAUKEE, WI (Jan. 14, 2007) - Detroit's Novi Marojevic scored a deflected goal on a restart in overtime Sunday, as the Ignition defeated the Milwaukee Wave 17-14 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
After a tripping penalty on the Wave at 13:24, Marojevic stood over the ball outside the top of the 3-point area. His shot deflected high off a Wave defender and looped into the net.
The play negated a furious Wave rally in the last two minutes of regulation, after a sixth-attacker goal by Detroit's Worteh Sampson made the score 14-10, Detroit. Todd Dusosky keyed the comeback, scoring with 2:04 left to make it a two-point game. Then with 1:26 left, his shot from the penalty area was nudged in at the post by Marcelo Fontana to tie the game.
Greg Howes scored two goals and assisted on two others for the Wave (6-8), closing to within 12 points of league scoring leader Jamar Beasley of the Ignition. Marcio Leite also had two goals for Milwaukee.
His second goal tied the game with 12:51 remaining when his low shot from the top of the penalty area was redirected by a defender past Sanaldo. With four points, Leite temporarily tied Philadelphia's Troy Donatelli and Detroit's Carlos Farias for eighth place in the MISL Puma Points standings with 30; Donatelli, like Leite a rookie, played later Sunday afternoon.
But the Ignition (9-6), winners of four straight, regained the lead less than two minutes later. Ryan Mack was at the far post when Jonathan Greenfield's 3-point blast rebounded to him, and he tapped it in.
With 2:30 remaining, Sampson scored for Detroit and things seemed dreary for the Wave. But in the fast-paced indoor game, things can change quickly, as the Wave showed.
