Wave United Notes:
*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton which was postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for more information.
*Wave United's 2-1 win v. Por on 6/23 was Milwaukee's first this season when allowing the initial score. Wave United is now 1-4-1 when the opponent scores first after going 1-8-0 in similar circumstances last season.
*The five goals surrendered by Milwaukee in the 5-2 loss @ VB on 6/18 were the most yielded by a Wave United team, and the most given up by a Milwaukee A-League squad since the Rampage dropped a 5-2 decision at Portland on 8/30/01.
*Wave United has trailed just once at halftime (1-0 v. Sea on 6/13) so far this season. However, Milwaukee has been outscored 16-7 after halftime and has blown three-of-its four halftime advantages.
*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/25 v. Min was the 26th of his A-League career, and the 10th in his two years with Wave United.
*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*The scoreless draw on 5/22 v. Min was also the first tie in Wave United history. Milwaukee did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just three minutes of overtime during the regular season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.
*In stark contrast to last season, Wave United has now played six overtime matches this season, including extra periods in each of its last three outings (6/25, 6/26, and 7/2). Milwaukee has played 92 combined overtime minutes and is 2-2-2 in such contests.
*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.
*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.
*Four players have logged double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team so far this season. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defender Pat White and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg all saw action in a CONCACAF qualifier v. Honduras last month at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated their Central American rivals 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the two-game total goal series to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 â Dec. 5, 2004.
Fri. 7/2 @ Milwaukee Wave United 2, Sounders 2 Attendance â 1,518
Johnny Torres' goal in the 52nd minute was the equalizer as Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team battled to a 2-2 tie with the Seattle Sounders Friday night (7/2) at Uihlein Soccer Park. The result moved Milwaukee's record to 4-7-2 (14 points) while the Seattle moved its mark to 6-6-2 (20 points). The outcome also enabled Seattle to clinch the season series (2-0-1) against Milwaukee, with the final game between the clubs slated for July 25 at Qwest Field in Seattle, WA.
The Sounders scored first on a header by Ryan Edwards in the 15th minute. Edwards was able to convert from six yards when he redirected a free kick initially played into the penalty area by Jonathan Bolanos. Milwaukee tied the score (1-1) before halftime when Todd Dusosky scored on a header from 12 yards out as he redirected a cross from the right side of the penalty area by Greg Howes.
Seattle re-gained the lead (2-1) when Roger Levesque was able to touch a shot past Milwaukee goalkeeper Jim Larkin in the 51st minute. The goal was set up on through ball by Bolanos to Levesque, who was able get the shot past the charging Larkin from the middle of the box. Wave United came right back to even the count again on a 25-yard blast by Torres, who's shot from straight out deflected off a Seattle defender past Sounders âkeeper Preston Burpo.
Both teams had opportunities thereafter to continue the scoring. Dusosky redirect a Howes pass off the right post in the 68th minute, while Burpo stopped Torres on a point blank chance from 10 yards out in the 72nd. Seattle's best chance to grab the lead came in the 86th minute when Welton's header got behind Larkin (after the Wave United âkeeper made an initial save falling backwards) but was cleared off the line by Milwaukee defender Chad Dombrowski.
