(Milwaukee, WI) Johnny Torres' goal in the 52nd minute was the equalizer as Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team battled to a 2-2 tie with the Seattle Sounders Friday night (7/2) at Uihlein Soccer Park. The outcome moved Milwaukee's record to 4-7-2 (14 points) while the Seattle moved its mark to 6-6-2 (20 points). The result also extended Wave United's unbeaten streak to a season high four straight games (3-0-1) while the Sounders are unbeaten in their last two (1-0-1). The outcome also enabled Seattle to clinch the season series (2-0-1) against Milwaukee, with the final game between the clubs slated for July 25 at Qwest Field in Seattle, WA.
The Sounders scored first on a header by Ryan Edwards in the 15th minute. Edwards was able to convert from six yards when he redirected a free kick initially played into the penalty area by Jonathan Bolanos. Milwaukee tied the score (1-1) before halftime when Todd Dusosky scored on a header from 12 yards out as he redirected a cross from the right side of the penalty area by Greg Howes.
Seattle re-gained the lead (2-1) when Roger Levesque was able to touch a shot past Milwaukee goalkeeper Jim Larkin in the 51st minute. The goal was set up on through ball by Bolanos to Levesque, who was able get the shot past the charging Larkin from the middle of the box. Wave United came right back to even the count again on a 25-yard blast by Torres, who's shot from straight out deflected off a Seattle defender past Sounders âkeeper Preston Burpo.
Both teams had opportunities thereafter to continue the scoring. Dusosky redirect a Howes pass off the right post in the 60th minute, while Burpo stopped Torres on a point blank chance from 10 yards out in the 72nd. Seattle's best chance to grab the lead came in the 79th minute when Welton's header got behind Larkin (after the Wave United âkeeper made an initial save falling backwards) but was cleared off the line by Milwaukee defender Chad Dombrowski.
Wave United continues a four game home stand when it hosts the Virginia Beach Mariners next Friday, July 9, 7:35 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. Next Friday will be another "Fireworks Friday" at Uihlein, with post-game fireworks sponsored by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and 99WMYX.
