Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery lost to the Puerto Rico Islanders tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of two goals to none in front of a crowd of 3,455. With the loss the Battery drops to a record of 2-9-4, 10 points, 9th position in the Eastern Conference. Puerto Rico improves to 4-11-5, 14 points 8th position in the Conference.

Puerto Rico opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Argentinean winger, Martin Zapata got in behind the Battery back-four on the right flank. He cut the ball across the box to forward, Mauricio Salles who tucked it neatly past Charleston goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock for the goal.

The Battery fought back and came close to scoring in the 11th minute. The ball was crossed to the back post but midfielder Steve Klein's header missed just wide left.

Charleston had a pair of chances to equalize in the 18th minute. First Klein was denied by goalkeeper Mike Ueltschey from 10 yards out. The ball rebounded to Chris Goos who saw his driven shot deflected away by Ueltschey.

After the break the Islanders consolidated their lead with a second goal. In the 57th minute Salles created some space on the left side. He sent a searching cross into the middle towards Puerto Rico forward Raul Diaz Arce. Diaz Arce dropped to one knee and directed a header past Hudock into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.

Charleston heads north Thursday for a three game road swing. The Battery plays Toronto Thursday night (7:30 PM Newsradio 730 WSC) then faces Rochester Sunday and Syracuse on Monday.
