Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Jan. 29, 2009) - A career covering 22 seasons, 766 total goals and four championship rings brings Michael King the ultimate honor on Feb. 15, when the Milwaukee Wave retire his No. 13 prior to the 2 p.m. kickoff against the Detroit Ignition.
King played 15 years in Milwaukee, serving as captain the entire time. He led the Wave to championships in 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2005 and owns practically every team offensive record. He retired after the 2007-08 campaign, scoring the Wave's final goal of the season in a 14-13 Game 2 semifinal loss to Baltimore.
Counting the additional seasons he played in Cleveland, Dallas and Baltimore, King played more indoor soccer games - 786 regular season and 105 playoff - than anyone in history.
"It has been a complete honor and privilege to have coached Michael King these last 15 years, and I feel no one is more worthy of having his jersey retired than our captain, Michael King," said Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer.
Only three other Wave numbers hang in the U.S. Cellular Arena rafters - the No. 5 of Pete Knezic, No. 11 of Steve Morris and No. 27 of Victor Nogueira.
The first 3,500 fans to attend the Feb. 15 game will receive a commemorative Michael King T-shirt courtesy of Aurora Quickcare. Tickets to the Feb. 15 game are available at any Ticketmaster outlet, or by calling the Wave office at 414-224-9283.
