Milwaukee Wave News Release
"It feels great, it feels nice to be part of history" would be the way Milwaukee Wave forward Nick Perera describes the team being on a 16 game winning streak. They now face a tough challenge when they head out on the road for five straight games. They begin the trip by playing back-to-back games, the first on Sunday, February 17th at 3:10 p.m. against Missouri, followed by a trip to Chicago on Monday at 7 p.m. against the Soul.
The Wave was able to extend that streak to 16 games with an 14-11 win over Rochester on Saturday. Israel Sesay and Giuliano Oliviero got the scoring going early for Milwaukee, as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Mauricio Salles of Rochester put the Lancers on the board with a 2 point goal of his own. It was 4-2 at the end of one quarter, but the Wave turned things up at the beginning of the second when Nick Perera and JP Rodrigues scored, to extend Milwaukee's lead to 8-2. Salles and Sesay would add goals for their respective teams to make it 10-4 after one half. Rochester dominated the third, as the Wave hung on to a 10-9 lead with one quarter remaining. Nick Perera and Ian Bennett would add to goals in the fourth to hold off Rochester's rally.
"It's not going to be easy, but we're going to take things one game at a time," stated Giuliano Oliviero of the team's upcoming road trip. They start with Missouri, who are currently on a two game losing streak after losses to Baltimore on Sunday, and the Wave the previous week. After that, it's a trip to Chicago who will enter the contest with a 9-13 record.
The Wave and Missouri have faced off three times this season, with the Wave having a 2-1 advantage for the series. In the first game the Comets rallied in the final minutes to force overtime, and came out with a 13-11 win. The second game Milwaukee jumped out to an early lead, and never looked back en route to a 18-6 win.
The Wave would come out on top in third match, that extended the team's winning streak to 15 games, and clinched them home-field advantage in the first round of the MISL playoffs. It was a back and forth game early that saw plenty of goals being scored. Although Israel Sesay, Ian Bennett, and Luan Oliveira would all score for the Wave, it was goals by Jeff Hughes, Bryon Alvarez, and Mads Falck that pushed Missouri to a 7-6 lead after the first quarter. In the second two teams remained neck and neck, but a late goal by Giuliano Oliviero put the Wave in front 12-11 heading into the half. Vahid Assapour and Luan Oliveira would add goals for their teams in the third, however Fabinho's three point goal kept the Wave on top 17-13 with a one quarter remaining. Leo Gibson scored early in the fourth for Missouri, but 12 straight points by Milwaukee gave them a 29-15 win.
Milwaukee has had Chicago's number all season long, as they have beaten Chicago in the five games the teams have played this season. The first was a 14-9 victory that saw the Wave overcome an 5-0 halftime deficit to get the win. In the team's second encounter Nick Vorberg's stellar goalkeeping kept Chicago at bay and the team ended up winning 9-2. In the third contest, the Wave would be down once again early, but the team rallied in the fourth to pull out a 12-6 win. The fourth meeting saw a similar result, as Milwaukee received goals from four different players to prevail 9-5.
In the last game the teams played, Milwaukee would use a big second half rally come out on top. Ian Bennett scored first for a 2-0 Wave lead, but two goals by Chicago made it 4-2 for the Soul after a quarter of play. Two more goals by the Soul in the second pushed their lead to 8-2. Luan Oliveira would put one in the net late for the Wave, trimming Milwaukee's deficit to 8-4 before half. The Wave absolutely dominated the second half, scoring 14 unaswered points. It began in the third, when the Wave held Chicago scoreless, and received two goals from Oliveira, another from Bennett, along with scores from Joe Hammes and Hewerton. In the final quarter Tenzin Rampa got in on the scoring to make it 16-8, and that was followed by Oliveira's fourth of the game. Although Chicago added four more points, that was all they could get as Milwaukee came away with a 18-10 win.
