ROCKFORD, Ill. (Jan. 16, 2010) - Held scoreless in the second half Saturday, the Milwaukee Wave dropped their second consecutive game, 10-7 to the Rockford Rampage.
Milwaukee (5-4) hosts Rockford (4-4) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Wave took a 7-4 lead just seconds before the end of the second quarter. Playing in a free kick from their own end with 10.5 seconds left, the Rampage banged the clearance attempt off Travis MacKenzie. The deflection landed at the feet of Ryan Mack, and he lifted a 3-pointer over keeper Danny Waltman, who had strayed from his line.
The goal would conclude the Wave's highlights, however. Rockford tallied twice in the third, once on a restart, and added a score on their only power play chance of the game in the fourth quarter. The Wave were unable to even get the sixth attacker on the field until 1:10 remained, and could not seriously threaten the Rampage goal during that time.
"A restart goal and a power play goal, that's the story of the game," said Wave coach Keith Tozer. "We had the lead before the end of half, felt good about where we were.
"Our finishing has got to be better," Tozer said. "Danny Waltman had one nice hand save, and he had a good kick save. But other than that I thought we had 4 or 5 chances and our finishing has to be better."
Milwaukee played without MISL leading scorer Marco Terminesi (illness) and veteran defender Troy Dusosky (hamstring). Hewerton Moreira saw his first action for the Wave since Nov. 27.
Milwaukee led 4-2 in the first half on goals by Mack and Joe Hammes, the latter on a restart from the top of the arc.
Mack finished with four points, his best outing of the season.
Sunday's game is Faith and Family Day at the U.S. Cellular Arena, and Grammy-nominated Christian artist Matthew West plays a postgame concert on the field. A collection for Haiti earthquake relief will be taken in the first half. Call 414-224-9283 or visit Ticketmaster.com.
