Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE -- Not even in the country for three weeks, Milwaukee Wave rookie Deco electrified the U.S. Cellular Arena crowd on Saturday night with a double-overtime game winner past Tony Meola, giving the Wave a 10-8 victory over the New Jersey Ironmen in their home opener.
Brett Wiesner slid the ball to the 19-year-old Brazilian at the right point, and his right-footed blast squirted under Meola's right arm at the 13:21 mark of the second extra period. Meola, the former U.S national team standout, had proven tough to crack until that point. He and Milwaukee's Nick Vorberg spent the game's first 87 minutes compiling highlights reels for themselves. Then Deco, who didn't arrive in the United States until Oct. 16, scored his second goal of the season to end it before a crowd of 4,510.
Another new Wave player, Joe Di Buono, scored his first career indoor goal earlier in the game. That second-period tally was followed 28 seconds later by Marcio Leite's second goal of the season, and that score gave Milwaukee a 6-4 halftime lead. But the Ironmen killed off one power play and survived another 5-minute infraction while clawing back into the game in the second half. Both their second-half goals were on restarts, the last by Daniel Antoniuk from former Wave player Goran Vasic with 5:11 remaining in the fourth quarter to forge the 8-all tie. Greg Howes had a goal and assist for the second straight game for Milwaukee. Joe Hammes registered the other Milwaukee goal. Antoniuk had two goals and an assist for the Ironmen (1-1).
Milwaukee heads on the road Saturday to take on the Chicago Storm at 7 p.m. at the Sears Centre. The Wave's next home game is at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 when the Wave host the Orlando Sharks. It's the third annual Wave Spirit Competition, where area dance teams will perform pre-game and during breaks. Also, Olympic gold medalist Bonnie Blair will present medals to championship youth soccer teams. Tickets are available at any Ticketmaster outlet or by calling (414) 224-9283.
