Milwaukee Wave News Release
BALTIMORE - Power plays were the difference Saturday as the Milwaukee Wave dropped their season opener 13-8 to the Baltimore Blast at 1st Mariner Arena.
The Blast (2-0) converted all three of their power play opportunities, then iced the game with a long, shorthanded 3-pointer into a empty net with 1:22 to go as the Wave played with a 6-on-4 advantage. Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg had just left the field in favor of a sixth attacker and the Wave already were on their only power play of the night. But Blast veteran Robbie Aristodemo, who also had two assists, curled a ball from his own end that beat a retreating Marcio Leite to the goal.
Milwaukee led the game 8-6 with just 4:54 to go, when Greg Howes slammed in a restart goal. But less than 50 seconds later the Blast tied it up, then Wave goalkeeper Vorberg was called for a penalty for touching the ball outside the penalty area. It took just seconds for Giuliano Celenza to score the eventual game-winner with 3:02 remaining.
The Wave had just the one power play with 2:35 left, when Billy Nelson was called for tripping. Leite, Brett Wiesner and Brazilian rookie Deco had the other goals for the Wave, who were missing veteran defender Lovelace Ackah due to a three-game suspension.
Four of the Wave's next five games are against expansion teams, and three of those are at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Milwaukee's home opener is at 5 p.m. Saturday against the New Jersey Ironmen on Hawaiian Luau night. Come see former U.S. national outdoor team goalkeeper Tony Meola, who led the Ironmen over Orlando 7-4 on Friday night in the team's first-ever contest. The game will be joined in progress live in Time Warner Sports, Channel 32. For more information on the game or to buy tickets, call (414) 224-9283. Tickets also can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets.
