Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE (Dec. 15, 2008) - The first School Day Game of the 2008-09 Milwaukee Wave season is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the U.S. Cellular Arena. It's the public launch of the fourth year of the Wave's innovative educational effort.

Approximately 18,000 students and teachers are expected to attend the three games this season, and almost 100 schools will take part as Making Waves continues to grow.

"We at the Wave are as proud of Making Waves as we are of the four league championships and 15 consecutive playoff appearances," said Matt Schroeder, vice president of communications for the Wave. "It's growth demonstrates the popularity of our players and the message they have to share with students in southeastern Wisconsin."

School Day Games are intrasquad scrimmages played at the U.S. Cellular Arena, the home field of the Wave. Educational messages are woven through the event, and of course the players engage the kids with T-shirt tosses and goal celebrations that often take them into the stands.

Making Waves is the Milwaukee Wave's school outreach program, a focused three-part effort that also includes school assemblies featuring Wave players and a Newspapers In Education curriculum produced in association with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

In the first season, about 5,000 students attended one School Day Game. The program grew to host two games and 7,000 students in 2006-07, then three games and 16,000 attendees last year.

The two curricula this year are Financial Literacy, in conjunction with Money Smart Week Wisconsin, and Health Education for Youth (HEY!), in cooperation with the Journal Sentinel.
