Milwaukee Wave News Release
BALTIMORE - Giuliano Oliviero cracked the 1,000-point barrier in style Saturday night, notching two goals and an assist to lift the Milwaukee Wave over the Baltimore Blast 10-6.
JP Rodrigues scored a crucial goal in the fourth quarter to give the Wave (7-6) a four-point cushion, and Milwaukee held on to sweep the Blast (5-6) in the four-game season series. The Wave are solidly in third in the MISL, one game ahead of the Blast with the tiebreaker in hand.
Oliviero, a 15-year indoor veteran, reached the milestone in the first half. He gave the Wave a 2-0 lead with a penalty kick late in the first quarter, and then set up close friend Kyt Selaidopoulos for the Wave's second goal at the 9:20 mark of the second quarter for his 1,000th career regular-season point.
"We were all happy for Gules, he got that 1,000th point in victory on the road," said Wave coach Keith Tozer. "But to keep Baltimore to six points in their own building speaks highly for the defense. And we got important goals at important times."
MISL leading scorer Marco Terminesi did not make the trip for the Wave as he continues to struggle with an illness. Terminesi had 17 points in the previous three games against Baltimore, so the defensive effort was especially key. Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg saved 16 of 19 attempts and the Wave blocked 16 shots, including four by Josh Rife.
Baltimore gave the Wave a little offensive assistance when it misplayed a touch by Travis MacKenzie into its own net in the second period, making it 6-2. Oliviero's second goal pushed the margin to 8-2 early in the third quarter.
Milwaukee killed off a 5-on-3 restart opportunity for Baltimore in the fourth quarter, and overall the league's best penalty killers stopped 2 of 3 man-down situations.
Rodrigues, who had not scored a point all season, made the first goal count after Baltimore had rallied to within 8-6. He used his speed to outrace Giuliano Celenza down the left flank before flipping the ball with the outside of his right foot past Dave Kern at the 9:17 mark of the fourth.
"JP's goal made a big difference on the sixth attacker," Tozer said. "If it's a 2-point game, a 3-pointer wins it."
Baltimore brought out the sixth attacker with 3:48 remaining but was unable to beat Vorberg or his defense.
"I thought our team defense was incredible tonight," Tozer said. "Nick was outstanding and our defense in front of him was great. We blocked angles, blocked passes, tackled, played the angles. I couldn't be more proud of the guys."
The Wave visit Philadelphia (3-6) on Saturday, their first visit to the Liacouras Center at Temple University. They return home at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13 against the Rockford Rampage in the Go Pink! game presented by Valvoline Instant Oil Change. Purchase a limited edition pink soccer ball to get autographs from former Packers stars such as Antonio Freeman and Frank Winters. You still need a game ticket in addition to the pink ball.
