Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Jan. 16, 2009) - In a contentious, hard-fought battle, the Milwaukee Wave upended the New Jersey Ironmen 8-6 Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Midfielder Marcelo Fontana scored the decisive goal for Milwaukee with only 2:26 remaining. The win snaps a losing streak for the Wave (4-2), who had dropped their previous two games and in the process, snapped a three-game win streak for New Jersey (3-2).
Milwaukee struck first when rookie and Marquette alum Nathan Sabich put one past the keeper halfway through the first quarter for the first goal of his career.
Only minutes later, the Ironmen's Goran Vasic tied the game at 2 with his first goal of the season. Ray Martinez put one in for New Jersey with 5:13 remaining in the first to put the Ironmen up 4-2.
Marco Terminesi continued his recent hot streak, firing his fifth goal in last three games past a diving Phillips to put the Wave up 6-4 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
The Ironmen tied the game at the 9:48 mark when Wave keeper Marcel Feenstra lost the handle on a Sunny Naumoski shot attempt in the third quarter, setting up Fontana's heroics.
Fontana inched closer to 400 career points with an unassisted two-point header after getting behind Phillips, flicking the ball with his foot over the keeper and into the open. His game-winner, off a feed from Giuliano Oliviero, gave Fontana 398 career points.
"We gave up too many points last weekend. Our focus this week was on individual and team defense and I thought our defense had a great game," said Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer.
The Wave travel to Detroit for a 3:30 p.m. CST kickoff on Sunday. The next home game is 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, also against New Jersey in what promises to be a busy weekend. The game will commemorate the team's Silver Anniversary with a player reunion and Alumni Game immediately following. Many former Wave stars expect to participate along with a handful of players from the first Wave team in 1984-85.
During the game, the Wave will wear white jerseys featuring the logo from the mid-1990s. The retro jerseys will be auctioned during the game in the arena annex, and signed by the players afterward, all to benefit Wave of Kindness. The game will also feature the Stein Gardens & Gifts Teddy Bear Toss.
