Watertown Uses Four-Run Eighth to End Diamond Dawgs' 3-Game Win Streak

LITTLE FALLS, NY The Watertown Rapids looked to exact a bit of revenge for last week's loss to the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs, then looked to exact some more revenge on Saturday against Amsterdam for spoiling their inaugural season last year.

The Rapids checked one item off their list on Friday, as they took advantage of a four-run eighth inning to overpower the Diamond Dawgs, 10-6.

Danny DiMarzo (Fishkill, NY/Post) started things off with a bang in the second, socking a ball over the left-center field fence. He would score himself and Jonathan Catapono (Rochester, NY/Grand Valley State) and give the Rapids an early 2-0 lead. The Rapids doubled up their lead on back-to-back RBI singles by Drake Smith (Waxhaw, NC/Winthrop) and Emil Matti (Parsippany, NJ/Wagner).

Watertown would get another run on a ground out by Catapono in the fifth. However, the RBI single would come back to bite Watertown starter Drew Mead (Bushkill, PA/Marymount) in the bottom of the inning. Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT/Mount St. Mary's) and Kyle Maurice (Exeter, NH/UMass Lowell) would bring home two runs, while a sacrifice fly by Jacob Josey scored another.

It would unravel even further in the sixth, as Maurice brought the game within one run with an RBI single that would score Dylan Klock (St. Johnsville, NY/St. Thomas Aquinas). However, the Rapids would respond with an RBI double by Khale Showers (Belmont, MI/Northwood). The Rapids would break the game open in the eighth, thanks to a bases loaded walk by Drake Smith (Waxhaw, NC/Winthrop). That would open the flood gates, as RBI hits by Matti and Evan Harold (Orlando, FL/Lander) brought all nine Rapids batters to the plate, scoring four runs and making the last two innings little more than a formality.

Mead would pick up the win for Watertown (7-3), who now pull even with the Utica Blue Sox (who were idle on Friday after a doubleheader with Albany was rained out) atop the Western Division. Joe Papeo (Matawan, NJ/Rider) was saddled with the loss for Mohawk Valley, who sees their three-game winning streak come to an end.

The Diamond Dawgs will be back at Veteran's Memorial Park on Saturday to face off with the Geneva Red Wings. They will be looking to avenge the loss on June 2, a 7-6 squeaker in Little Falls. The Rapids will head back to Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds for their first meeting this season with the Amsterdam Mohawks. They also will be looking to avenge a loss, a 7-5 heartbreaker in last year's playoffs.
