Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Week in Review

The Waterloo Black Hawks were 1-1-1 last week, bouncing back from a 3-0 loss to the Green Bay Gamblers Tuesday to earn an OTL point from a 4-3 decision against the Sioux City Musketeers Friday and a 4-2 win while visiting the Omaha Lancers Saturday. Scott MacDonald led the Hawks with a goal and two assists. Stephon Williams claimed his first Waterloo win with 34 saves Saturday.

Penalty Shooting

On Friday in Sioux City, Taylor Cammarata became the first Black Hawk to convert a penalty shot in more than a season. The last Hawk to do it was Nick Ebert against Green Bay's Steve Summerhays during a 5-1 loss in Game Two of the 2010 playoffs. Jamie Hill had the last successful regular season penalty shot versus Nick Pisellini of the Chicago Steel during a 6-1 victory on February 12, 2010. Cammerata had been turned away on Waterloo's only other penalty shot attempt this season, at Indiana against the Ice on October 29th.

Specialized Special Teams

The Hawks scored on two-of-twelve power plays while killing off 13-of-16 opponent advantages last week, in line with the club's season averages. However on Friday, Tyler Zepeda scored Waterloo's eighth shorthanded goal of the season, second in the league only to the Youngstown Phantoms' twelve. The Hawks also killed off an opposing two-man advantage Friday, the tenth time in eleven tries during 2011-2012 they have done so.

Michaelson's Month

Forward A.J. Michaelson gave Waterloo a 1-0 lead early in Saturday's game against Omaha, capping a strong four-week stretch. Since January 13th, Michaelson has four goals and five assists out of the 16 points he has recorded this season. Over the span, he also has a +8 plus-minus rating. All but one of Michaelson's points since the beginning of January have been recorded at even strength or shorthanded.

Three in Three

This weekend, the Black Hawks play three games in three days for the second time this season. Waterloo was 1-2-0 during a three day stretch from October 28th through 30th at Indiana twice and concluding with a visit to Muskegon. The Hawks will face similarly grueling weekends three more times in 2011-2012. Waterloo has not swept a three-in-three run since January 8-10, 2010 against Team USA and the Chicago Steel twice.
