Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Week in Review

The Black Hawks played two tight games while visiting the Tri-City Storm last weekend. During a 4-2 win Friday, Waterloo pulled ahead to a 3-0 lead before the Storm closed the gap in the final minutes. Tyler Zepeda's empty net goal sealed the win. Saturday, scores from Taylor Cammarata and Aaron Pearce could not push the Hawks past their hosts who held on for a 3-2 decision.

Not Cheated for Chances

Waterloo has put a lot of shots on net against their opponents in recent games. With 40 shots on goal Friday and 39 more Saturday, the Hawks have managed at least 35 chances in six of their eight games since Christmas break. For the season, the Black Hawks are averaging 31.2 shots on goal, ranked sixth in the USHL. The team allows 29 shots per game, fifth fewest in the league.

Pearce Putting Up Numbers

Notching goals in each of the Hawks' games last weekend, forward Aaron Pearce now has four points in his last four games. Over that span, the veteran has a +5 plus-minus rating. Pearce's shorthanded score Friday was the second during his USHL career and the fourth by a Black Hawk this season. With five goals and four assists in 27 games during 2011-2012, Pearce is trying to improve upon a total of 16 points last year.

Penalty Minute Pullback

At one point in December, the Black Hawks were the second-most penalized team in the USHL. The average number of penalty minutes Waterloo draws each game has slid to 17.1, currently ranked seventh in the league. The Black Hawks were charged with only 25 PIMs in two contests last weekend in Kearney. Since returning from the holiday break in late December, Waterloo has drawn an even slimmer 9.4 penalty minutes per game.

Enjoy the Ride

Kearney, Nebraska, the site of the Hawks' most recent game, is located on Interstate 80. So is Youngstown, Ohio, 1,034 miles to the east, where the Waterloo will play Thursday. The Waterloo bus would have to make 18 consecutive trips to or from Cedar Rapids Ice Arena in order to accumulate the same number of miles. To shed more light on the distance between the two locations, the sun rose at 7:41 local time in Youngstown this morning, an hour and thirteen minutes before appearing on the central Nebraska horizon.
