Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Week in Review
The Black Hawks suffered consecutive home defeats for the first time this season. They earned a point from a 4-3 shootout loss to Team USA Friday before being beaten in regulation Saturday by the Omaha Lancers 5-2. Taylor Cammarata (goal and assist) and A.J. Michaelson (two assists) were the only Hawks to record a point in both games. Waterloo and their combined opponents were both one-for-ten during weekend power plays.
Defense Does Damage
As a group, Black Hawks defensemen did not score during the first eleven games of the season. The corps has eight goals in eight games since Trevor Owens broke the ice against Chicago on November 11th, including a score in each game last weekend. Ian McCoshen leads the group with three markers, all recorded in his last five games. As a unit, Black Hawks defensemen have also contributed 29 assists.
Cameranesi Coming On Strong
After a point in five consecutive games, Tony Cameranesi's streak ended Saturday. Still, the first-year forward has been a notable contributor for the Hawks since returning from the World Junior A Challenge in mid-November. In seven games since that competition, he has five goals, four assists, and is +3. Before and after the tournament, Cameranesi has consistently averaged around 2.75 shots on goal per game, but his shooting percentage jumped to 26.3% in the last three weeks, compared with 7.1% in the first month of the season.
Shootouts
Friday's 4-3 overtime loss dropped the Black Hawks record to 0-2 in shootouts this season. The Hawks have converted one of nine shootout attempts, while turning away six of nine tries by their opponents. Still, shootouts have been good for Waterloo historically. Under P.K. O'Handley, the Hawks are 28-24 in the tie-breaking scenario. Since the USHL first adopted shootouts in 1996-1997, Waterloo owns a 54-40 record. The most shootouts in one season were eleven during 1999-2000, when the Hawks went 7-4.
Back-to-Back Basics
Since the beginning of the 2008-2009 season, the results have generally been either spectacular or subpar when the Black Hawks have met the same opponent on consecutive nights. In that time, the Hawks have swept the scenario four times and been swept on three occasions. Waterloo has split in four other situations, including the last two - at Indiana earlier this season and against Cedar Rapids in November of 2010.
