Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Larson Ledger

Nick Larson scored in his season debut Saturday against the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders. The goal was Larson's 20th during regular season play in his USHL career. His next point, goal or assist, will be another milestone; he currently has 39 in the regular season. Larson was slowed by nagging injuries in the early fall; he had not played in the preseason, nor in the Black Hawks' first game against Green Bay on October 4th. His return should boost Black Hawk special teams. Last season, twelve of Larson's goals came on the power play.

Even-Strength Efficiency

The Black Hawks have been competitive even without great success on the power play. Four of five Waterloo goals in the opening games of this season have been scored at even-strength. In 2007-2008, the Hawks leaned on the power play for 72 of their 177 scores (more than 40%). Saturday's game did not provide much opportunity to tinker with the man-advantage; both Black Hawk opportunities were cut short by offsetting penalties after less than a minute.

Student of the Game

Chris Student has helped set up goals in his first two USHL games. Both assists were tied to goals by Craig Smith. The last Black Hawk defenseman to begin his career with points in each of his first two games was Vince LoVerde, who scored goals against Green Bay and Indiana in the opening contests of the 2005-2006 season. In Minnesota high school hockey last winter, Student averaged just less than two points per game.

The Future is Tonight

The USHL Futures Draft begins late this afternoon (Tuesday) at 4pm. All league teams will have the opportunity to fill their twelve-man affiliate lists with players born in 1991 and 1992. Six current Black Hawks were previously acquired in the Futures Draft and spent time on Waterloo's affiliate list: Student, Larson, Lee Moffie, Tyler Barnes, Michael Fink, and Brock Montpetit.
