Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Two 3:05 Games
The Black Hawks will play at 3:05 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Des Moines Buccaneers respectively. The start time for Saturday's game was altered in early October to accommodate community-sanctioned trick-or-treating hours in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. When the Fighting Saints visit, they will be playing their eighth consecutive game away from Mystique Ice Center to open the season. Waterloo was 3-3-1 against Dubuque in 2021/22. Sunday's tilt with the Des Moines is the first game between the teams since the Buccaneers held off the Hawks, 4-3 on October 1st in West Des Moines.
Longest Homestand in Decades
From this Saturday through November 24th, the Hawks will play eight consecutive home games at Young Arena. The last time Waterloo experienced such a sequence was in 1998/99. That year, the Hawks played eight straight on friendly ice from January 15th to February 6th. Waterloo went 3-3-2 then. Four of the opponents from that run either no longer exist or have relocated with a new nickname: the Thunder Bay Flyers, Twin Cities Vulcans, Fargo-Moorhead Ice Sharks, and the Rochester Mustangs.
Defensemen Doubling Up
Ben Robertson had two assists last Friday during a Black Hawks victory in Sioux Falls. The next night in Omaha, Tyler Procious set up two goals. With those performances, a Waterloo defenseman has produced multiple points in five of the Hawks' eight games during 2022/23. Robertson and Procious join Keith McInnis (September 24th), Aaron Pionk (October 8th), and Gennadi Chaly (October 15th). Waterloo is 4-1-0 on nights when an individual defenseman produces at least two points.
On Overtimes
The Black Hawks won their first overtime game of the season on Saturday, 3-2 against the Omaha Lancers. Gavyn Thoreson scored the winning goal less than a minute into the extra period. In 2021/22, Waterloo was 6-4-0 in overtimes and shootouts. Two of those overtimes were against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
Recent Games
The Hawks defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede 5-2 on Friday, then rallied past the Omaha Lancers 3-2 in overtime Saturday. It's the first time Waterloo has won road games on consecutive nights since Games Two and Three of last spring's first round playoff series against the Lincoln Stars. The last occasion when the Hawks picked up a pair of road wins during the same regular season weekend was almost a year ago in Fargo (3-1 on October 29th and 4-3 in overtime October 30th). Facing Sioux Falls and Omaha, Garrett Schifsky totaled three goals and two assists; Nicholas DeGraves and Gavyn Thoreson had the game-winning goals.
