Holiday Week

The Black Hawks have an active schedule featuring three games over a four-day span beginning Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. when the Madison Capitols (10-5-1) visit Young Arena. The matchup is the only one between the Hawks and Capitols this winter. The teams last met on New Year's Eve to cap the 2019 calendar year, a game which Waterloo won 7-3. Then the Hawks play a home-and-home series of sorts against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (7-7-0). Thursday's 7:05 p.m. contest will be the 50th Thanksgiving hockey game played in Waterloo and the 21st time Cedar Rapids has been the visiting opponent for the traditional tilt. The Hawks will play a return game on Saturday at 7:05. It will be Waterloo's first trip to Cedar Rapids Ice Arena since a 4-3 victory in February 15, 2020, before the rink was damaged by a severe storm that August.

Busy Goalies

The Black Hawks and Capitols feature the goaltenders with the most minutes played in the USHL this season. Madison's Simon Latkoczy has been on the ice for a league-leading total of 726 minutes. Making two appearances last weekend, Latkoczy overtook the Hawks' Jack Williams, who currently stands at 701.

Four Days in the East

The Black Hawks may as well be honorary members of the USHL's Eastern Conference this week. Waterloo's three games versus Madison and Cedar Rapids come as the Hawks are awash in matchups against Western rivals. From November 6th through December 28th, the 10 other games on the slate pair Waterloo with a foe from the west. To date, the Hawks are 3-2-0 against the Eastern Conference.

Everyone at the Table

Will Schumacher made his United States Hockey League debut last Saturday. Waterloo selected him during Phase I of the 2020 USHL Draft, and Schumacher has spent this season with the Minnesota Magicians of the North American Hockey League. The 17-year-old produced a pair of assists in the Hawks' win against Sioux City, making him the 27th Waterloo player to record a point this season. At this time, only the U.S. National Team Development Program has a longer list of point-producers.

Recent Games

Waterloo played a lone game last weekend, topping the Sioux City Musketeers 5-2 at Young Arena on Saturday. Four different Black Hawks had multiple points, led by Connor Brown with a goal and two assists. It was the second time the Hawks have scored at least five goals in a game during 2021/22 and is exceeded only by Waterloo's 8-4 win against the Lincoln Stars on October 23rd. Emmett Croteau was in net for each of those games, making 28 saves in Saturday's win.
