Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

March 25, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

How the West Was Won?

Three of five games remaining on the Waterloo Black Hawks schedule will be played between Friday and Sunday. The Hawks host the Des Moines Buccaneers and Sioux Falls Stampede before visiting the Green Bay Gamblers for a Sunday matinee. Two wins during those three games (or two regulation losses by the Omaha Lancers) would allow Waterloo to clinch the Western Conference championship. The Hawks have already met Des Moines twice in March, claiming a pair of road wins. The tilt with Sioux Falls - last season's conference champion - will be the first since a 4-2 Stampede victory on February 9th. With Sioux Falls currently battling for third place in the conference, the meeting could be the precursor to a first or second round playoff series between the Hawks and Stampede. Waterloo and Green Bay have not gotten together since November; the Gamblers are dueling for the final Eastern Conference playoff slot.

The Scoring Race

With two weeks left during the USHL regular season, as many as three Black Hawks could finish among the league's top ten scorers. Currently at 58 points, Peter Krieger is tied with three other players for fifth. Three points back, Liam Pecararo has a share of ninth place. Brandon Montour's 12 goals and 41 assists add to 53 and give him a share of 12th overall, however Montour leads all league defensemen in scoring by an 11-point margin. Patrick Russell has 26 goals, tying him for sixth in that category.

Big Numbers

Young Arena hosted the largest crowd of the winter Saturday, with 3,412 fans in attendance to see the Black Hawks battle the Fargo Force. It was the eighth sellout of the season. Now with a total 2013/14 attendance of 71,392, if at least 8,608 fans are on hand for the final three home games of the season, this would be the eighth time during the last nine years that 80,000 or more Black Hawks fans have come out to cheer the team.

Friedman on the Brink

Veteran defenseman Mark Friedman notched an assist on Patrick Russell's goal last Saturday. If he can set up four more goals during the Hawks' final five regular season games, he would become just the 20th player during Waterloo's junior era to record 60 career assists. With 56 to his credit so far, he is currently one assist behind Jim Banaszek, Matt Arhontas, and Dan Sova.

Weekly Recap

The Fargo Force clamped down on the USHL's top offense during two games last weekend. Blake Winiecki scored the lone goal during a 2-1 loss to Fargo last Friday. Drew Melanson and Patrick Russell each found the net on Saturday, but the Force prevailed 4-2.
