Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

November 26, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Busy Holiday Week

The Black Hawks face their first three-game week of the regular season, matching up against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Thursday and Friday before welcoming the Sioux City Musketeers to Young Arena Saturday. Thursday's affair will mark the Hawks' 42nd Thanksgiving game dating back to 1964; this will be the 14th consecutive year that the Hawks have met the RoughRiders on the fourth Thursday in November. Nine of the 13 prior holiday matchups with Cedar Rapids were settled by one goal, with three concluded in overtime. While the RoughRiders are Waterloo's most notable rival, the Hawks have been playing against the Musketeers longer than any other current USHL franchise in a series which dates back to 1972.

Winiecki Makes Waves

Last weekend, Blake Winiecki scored two goals in each of the Black Hawks' games. It was the first time a Waterloo player has recorded back-to-back multi-goal performances since Vince Hinostroza did it nearly a year ago on November 24th and 30th versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Dubuque Fighting Saints respectively. Winiecki is now tied for Waterloo's team lead with nine goals this season. The Lakeville, Minnesota native will double his goal total from 2012/13 the next time he puts the puck into the net.

Now You (Don't) See Us.

After the Black Hawks host the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Thursday, there will be just four opponents remaining who Waterloo has not faced in 2013/14. The Hawks will not see the Des Moines Buccaneers, Fargo Force, Indiana Ice, nor Muskegon Lumberjacks until 2014. That group currently owns an aggregate record of 28-33-10 (winning percentage .465). Meanwhile, the opponents Waterloo has run into lately have consistently been near the top of the league; the six teams the Hawks have already met in November are 65-34-14 together, for a winning percentage of .637.

Israelsson on Short List

Last weekend, Mathias Israelsson became the 23rd Waterloo junior-era goaltender to record a shutout. He made 25 saves Saturday versus the Lincoln Stars. The "goose egg" was the first by the Hawks during the regular season. Last year, Waterloo blanked opponents on five occasions, four of them prior to December 1st.

Weekly Recap

The Hawks equaled their highest scoring output of the season Friday during an 8-6 loss to the National Team Development Program U-18's. Liam Pecararo and Mark Friedman each recorded three points. The loss ended a six-game home winning streak. Saturday Friedman had two assists and Blake Winiecki scored two goals as the Hawks topped Lincoln 3-0. It was Waterloo's sixth road win during the current campaign.
