Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
April 2, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Four in Six
With just two weeks remaining in the United States Hockey League season, the Black Hawks undertake one of the most hectic stretches of the year, with four games in six days. Waterloo plays the last of five games rematching the 2012 Clark Cup finalists when they visit the Green Bay Gamblers Tuesday. Friday, the Hawks oppose Dubuque at the Mystique Ice Center as the Fighting Saints attempt to clinch the Anderson Cup. Back home at Young Arena Saturday and Sunday, Waterloo's regular season home schedule concludes with in-state rivalry games versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Des Moines Buccaneers. The Hawks lead the Omaha Lancers by three points for fourth place and the final playoff position in the Western Conference with six games remaining. Three wins or three Lancer losses will seal Waterloo's playoff bid.
March of the Black Hawks
Waterloo concluded March with a .500 record, going 4-4-1 in nine games. Goalie Cal Petersen was in net for three of the Hawks' wins, earning a shutout against the Tri-City Storm Friday to help whittle his goals-against average for the month to 1.67. Offensively, Justin Kloos led Waterloo with five goals and tied for the team lead with five assists. Zach Stepan paced the club with a +6 plus/minus rating.
Most Helpful Hawk
Recording an assist on both Friday and Saturday last weekend, Justin Kloos pushed his league-leading season total to 51. A helper on Friday versus the Tri-City Storm made him the first Black Hawk with 50 in a season since Jason Blake in 1993/94. Now past Blake, the only junior-era Waterloo skater to ever have more assists in one year was Tom Bissett, who set the franchise record with 65 in 1984/85. Kloos has ten points in his last eight games. He's earned a positive or even plus/minus rating in each of the last twelve contests.
East and West
Five of six games remaining on the Hawks' schedule are matchups with foes from the Eastern Conference, against whom they are 19-10-0 this season. Waterloo's schedule versus the Western Conference concludes Sunday with the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Black Hawks will try to improve on a 14-11-4 mark versus the West. Justin Kloos is Waterloo's top scorer in games within the Western Conference, totaling 41 points. Taylor Cammarata has 43 in contests against the East.
Weekly Recap
For the ninth time this season, Waterloo notched seven goals in a game, besting the Tri-City Storm 7-0 last Friday. Ian McCoshen had a goal and two assists. The Hawks returned to the ice Saturday to earn their first win in five tries versus the Fargo Force, 2-1. Taylor Cammarata and Mike Huntebrinker each had two points.
