Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Stars and Steel Finales

This week, the Black Hawks conclude their 2012/13 scheduled games against both the Chicago Steel and the Lincoln Stars. Waterloo's opponents lead both season series to this point; the Steel won the only previous engagement with the Hawks, 3-1 in early December, while the Stars have a 4-3 edge in standings points after three meetings. Waterloo has already concluded their matchups with six other opponents. After Friday's game versus Lincoln, the Hawks' final ten games will be divided among the USHL's other seven teams.

Kloos Climbs to 70

With a goal and an assist against the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday, Justin Kloos became the second individual Black Hawk this season with 70 points. The USHL's second-leading scorer joins linemate Taylor Cammarata in that category. In Saturday's win, Kloos had his 21st multipoint performance of the season. This is the first year Waterloo has had more than one player produce 70 points since Scott Johnson, Chris Scheid, and Mike Notermann all crossed that threshold in 1986/87.

Games in Hand

Having taken the ice 52 times, the Black Hawks have played at least one fewer game than every team in the USHL Western Conference, except the Tri-City Storm. After contests Tuesday in Chicago and Friday at home against Lincoln, Waterloo will begin next week with even more leverage against the three teams who are closest in the standings. Except in the unlikely event of a postponement, the Hawks will have two games-in-hand when compared to Lincoln, the Fargo Force, and the Omaha Lancers at this time next week.

Papa at 100

Last Saturday's tilt with the Fighting Saints was Ryan Papa's 100th USHL regular season game. During a career in the league which began as an affiliate in 2010/11, Papa has 29 goals and 38 assists. His next point will push him past his total from last season. Tuesday will be the first opportunity the Prospect Heights, Illinois, native has ever had to appear during a USHL game in Chicago in front of family and friends. Papa was injured last March when the Hawks made their only trip to Edge Ice Arena.

Weekly Recap

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders scored the only power play goal during a dozen combined chances last Friday; it proved to be the decisive tally in a 2-1 win against the Black Hawks. Justin Kloos had the lone Waterloo goal. He scored again Saturday in Dubuque and linemate Zach Stepan recorded three points in a 4-3 shootout victory versus the Fighting Saints. Eamon McAdam made 28 saves and stopped three shootout attempts. The decisions keep Waterloo two points ahead of Dubuque in the race for the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup.
