Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

March 5, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Shifting Scenes

The Waterloo Black Hawks have seen both of this weekend's opponents recently, but on different ice. The Hawks will meet the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Commercial Street Friday after a 6-2 loss last weekend at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The following evening, Waterloo travels to Dubuque; the teams faced-off at Young Arena February 22nd in a game the Hawks won 4-3. After this weekend, Waterloo plays just three more games versus their Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup rivals, home against the Saints on March 23rd then the RoughRiders on April 6th and at Dubuque April 5th.

Surpassing Last Season

Taylor Cammarata's goal Saturday versus Cedar Rapids was the 214th of the year for the Black Hawks, one more than the club recorded in 2011/12. Waterloo currently leads the United States Hockey League in team scoring and is the only squad averaging more than four goals per contest (4.3). If the Hawks can maintain that average, they are on pace to surpass the franchise's Tier 1 season record of 246 goals - set in 2008/09 - during the final weekend of the month. Waterloo's junior era all-time best is 270 goals, achieved in 1979/80, the first season of all-junior hockey in the community.

Salerno Steps Up

Rookie forward Brandon Salerno is in the midst of what is arguably his best stretch as a player in the USHL. After a goal and two assists during a pair of games last week, the Maine recruit has six points in his last nine appearances. More importantly, Saturday's loss in Cedar Rapids was the only occasion during that span when he has had a negative plus/minus rating. For the season, Salerno has played in 46 of 50 games, recording five goals with eleven assists and a -7 rating.

February Leaders

The Black Hawks were 4-4-2 in February as Justin Kloos, Taylor Cammarata, and Zach Stepan all averaged more than a point-per-game. Kloos led the squad with eight goals, while Cammarata had a team-best ten assists last month. Defenseman Mark Friedman was productive at both ends of the rink, notching five points and leading the Hawks with a +6 plus/minus rating. Cal Petersen earned three victories; his 90.8% save percentage and 3.22 goals-against average were both better than his season stats in those categories.

Weekly Recap

The Hawks improved their record at Young Arena to 16-8-0 with a 6-4 decision Thursday versus the Tri-City Storm. Taylor Cammarata scored twice, one of four Waterloo players with multiple points during the game. He also notched a goal and assist Saturday, but the Black Hawks fell to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 6-2.
