Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks will be one of six United States Hockey League teams taking part in the USHL Atlantic Challenge during early September at two rinks in the New York Metropolitan Area, the league announced Friday.
The preseason event will be conducted from September 6th through 8th at the Ferraro Brothers Ice Center in East Meadow, New York, and The Ice House in Hackensack, New Jersey. Exhibition contests will be part of the Hawks' preseason schedule and will provide east coach-based scouts from professional and college teams an opportunity analyze participating players. Three youth and junior hockey organizations - the Long Island Gulls, New York Bobcats, and North Jersey Avalanche - are hosting the event, as well as a corresponding series of games featuring teams of younger players.
"After summer camps and offseason training and the start of practices, players from every team will be looking forward to the chance to play, plus the exposure to scouts and college coaches offers some great opportunities," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "I'm looking forward to making this trip a great experience for the Black Hawks as we build our 2013/14 team."
The Ferraro Brothers Ice Center is owned and managed by twin brothers Chris Ferraro and Peter Ferraro, who played for Waterloo in 1992. The Ferraros' playing careers went on to include an NCAA national championship at the University of Maine, appearances with the U.S. National Team, and stints with several NHL franchises.
The other teams invited to participate in the USHL Atlantic Challenge are the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, Muskegon Lumberjacks, Youngstown Phantoms, Sioux City Musketeers, and Sioux Falls Stampede. The Black Hawks will learn about the specific game dates, times, and opponents associated with the trip later this summer.
