Waterloo Black Hawks Preview

March 11, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Rousing Rematches

For the second consecutive weekend, the Waterloo Black Hawks play three games in three days. Two of the upcoming opponents were also on the schedule last weekend; the Hawks edged both the Sioux City Musketeers and Des Moines Buccaneers, 3-2. Sioux City comes to Waterloo Friday, while the Black Hawks return to Des Moines for another tilt with the Bucs on Sunday. In between, the Dubuque Fighting Saints visit Young Arena on Saturday. The contests with Sioux City and Dubuque will each be the sixth and final matchups during the season series Waterloo plays against those two in-state rivals during 2013/14.

Fastest to 50

Leading scorer Peter Krieger became the first Waterloo Black Hawk with 50 points this season when he recorded a pair of assists last Friday versus the Sioux City Musketeers. Krieger added two more points Saturday against the Des Moines Buccaneers. In that game, Liam Pecararo also crossed the 50 point threshold, notching a power play goal. Defenseman Brandon Montour is presumptively the next Waterloo skater likely to achieve the milestone; he has 49 points after a goal Friday and two assists on Saturday.

No Place Like Home

With a playoff position assured, the next accomplishment that the Black Hawks can earn is home ice advantage. To secure a first round Clark Cup playoff series beginning at Young Arena, the Hawks would need seven more points. Any standings points that the Sioux City Musketeers miss would also reduce the number. Waterloo has not had home ice advantage for a best-of-five series since 2008.

High Flying Finalist

Black Hawks affiliate defenseman Phil Beaulieu was a finalist for Minnesota's coveted Mr. Hockey Award, presented annually to the best prep player in the state. As a senior for Duluth East, Beaulieu led the team in scoring during the regular season and finished the campaign with 44 points in 31 games; the Greyhounds reached the Minnesota AA State Tournament, held last weekend. Waterloo acquired Beaulieu in a trade from the Fargo Force, where he appeared in 22 USHL contests over two seasons. Playing in Fargo before high school hockey started in the fall, he recorded seven assists in a dozen games.

Weekly Recap

Tim Lappin had three points, and the Black Hawks moved to first place with a 5-2 victory against the Indiana Ice on Thursday. On the road against the Sioux City Musketeers the next night, the Hawks stayed on top as two Patrick Russell goals spurred a 3-2 comeback win. Waterloo's weekend concluded with another 3-2 away victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers, during which Peter Krieger contributed a goal and an assist.
