Waterloo Beats Dubuque on Late Penalty Shot Goal

Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
The Dubuque Fighting Saints fell in regulation for the first time this season as Waterloo scored on a shorthanded penalty shot with under two minutes to go in regulation to win 3-2 in Dubuque. Wyatt Schingoethe scored the game winner as the Black Hawks scored twice in the third period to win. The loss was the first of the season for Dubuque when leading after two periods of play. Dubuque fell to 8-1-1 on the season while Waterloo moved to 9-2-1.
-The Black Hawks beat the Saints at their own game, winning the third period. Dubuque had been the best third period team in the league this season with a plus-eight goal differential in the final stanza.
-The game had a playoff-like feel in mid-November. Dubuque and Waterloo played a physical, low-scoring contest that showcased the team's defensive strengths. There was not much open ice, but the high-skilled offenses still found room.
-Dylan Jackson, Ty Jackson and Matthew Kopperud proved to be the best line on the ice once again for either team. Dylan had both goals for the Saints, tying Riese Gaber for the team lead with six. Kopperud added two assists to snap a two-game pointless drought and Ty Jackson extended his point-streak to seven games with an assist.
-Waterloo used a couple bounces to their advantage on their first two goals of the game. The first goal from Ryan Drkulec bounced off a Saints defender in front and squibbed past Erik Portillo. The next goal went off a Saints stick and dropped to Xander Laampa in the slot before he fired it past Portillo.
-Dane Montgomery was the Black Hawk who drew the penalty shot, but he was injured on the play, allowing Schingoethe to take the shot. The slick forward slid the puck under Portillo's left pad for the game winner.
-With the win, Waterloo shot to first in the Cowbell Cup standings. Dubuque stayed in second with CR behind both.
-Next up for the Fighting Saints will be the Fargo Force, who played in Cedar Rapids Friday night. CR beat Fargo 4-2 so both the Force and Saints will be looking to escape weekend sweeps on Saturday night.
