Edmonton Capitals News Release

Wailuku, HA - Maui Na Koa Ikaika is Hawaiian for The Strong Warriors of Maui, and they certainly lived up to their name on Tuesday night against the Edmonton Capitals, as they belted a dozen runs across the plate in a 12-3 win.

Caps all-star pitcher Alexander Francisco finally suffered his first loss of the 2010 Golden Baseball League season, dropping to 7-1 after giving up 10 runs (nine earned) on six hits and four walks. His Maui counterpart, Wes Ethridge, improved to 6-0 on the season, scattering one run and 10 hits over 5.2 innings while striking out eight Caps batters.

Leading the offensive charge for Na Koa Ikaika was catcher Phil Avlas, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while left fielder Mark Okana also drove in a pair of runs. For the Caps, centre fielder Ryan Stevenson and short stop Enrique Cruz each had three hits in a losing cause. Cruz and second baseman Matt Rogelstad each had an RBI.

After Francisco was only able to pitch 3.2 innings before being pulled, the newest Caps pitcher made his debut. Berek Fasking, who was acquired last week from the Tijuana Cimarrones, tossed 3.1 innings and only gave up two hits while striking out three. Fasking was 2-4 with a 5.63 ERA with the Cimarrones and Calgary Vipers in 2010 prior to joining Edmonton.

The Caps (8-6) and Na Koa Ikaika (6-2) square off again tonight, starting at 10:35 p.m. (MST). They finally return home to face the North Division first-half champions, the Chico Outlaws (9-7), on Tuesday, Aug. 10 - the first of 13 consecutive games at TELUS Field.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
