Warriors' Halbgewachs Named WHL On the Run Player of the Week

March 12, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Moose Jaw Warriors forward Jayden Halbgewachs has been named WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending March 11, 2018.

Halbgewachs, a signed prospect of the San Jose Sharks, recorded 12 points (7G-5A) and a +2 rating in four games this week as the Warriors closed in on their first Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the 2017-18 WHL Regular Season Champion.

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound product of Emerald Park, Sask. began his week with a hat trick as part of a five-point performance in a 6-2 win against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He scored Moose Jaw's second, fourth, and sixth goals while also picking up a pair of assists. For his efforts, Halbgewachs was named the first star of the game as well as the WHL's first star of the night.

Two days later as the Warriors took a 6-4 loss at the hands of the Prince Albert Raiders, Halbgewachs had a pair of goals and three points, earning him third star honours for the game. During Saturday's highly-touted battle between the Warriors and Swift Current Broncos, Halbgewachs had a goal in Moose Jaw's 4-2 victory. Closing out his week against the Brandon Wheat Kings, Halbgewachs had a goal and three points, earning third star of the night honours in the WHL.

Of his 12 points, eight (4G-4A) came at even strength while four (3G-1A) came on the power play. This week mark's the second time Halbgewachs has captured WHL On the Run Player of the Week honours this season, winning it in November 2017.

Sunday's performance allowed Halbgewachs to overtake Broncos captain Glenn Gawdin (Calgary Flames) for the lead in the WHL scoring race with 125 points (68G-57A) and a plus-44 rating in 69 games. Of his league-leading 68 goals, 25 have come on the power play, two were short-handed goals and 11 have stood up as game-winners. He has recorded 17 multi-goal games, including three hat tricks to give him five for his WHL career.

Halbgewachs is also two goals away from becoming just the sixth WHL player to score 70 goals in a single season since the 1990-91 campaign. He'd be the first WHL player to accomplish the feat since Pavel Brendl scored 73 goals with the Calgary Hitmen during the 1998-99 WHL regular season.

Originally selected by the Kamloops Blazers in the first round, 19th overall, of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Halbgewachs has grown to be an offensive force in the league, registering 276 points (137G-139A) in 273 career WHL regular season games. He has 38 career power-play goals, seven short-handed goals and 22 game-winning goals.

Halbgewachs is also playing about a point-per-game pace in his WHL playoff career, recording 18 points (10G-8A) in 17 games, including three power-play goals and one game-winning goal.

The Warriors will look to secure the East Division and Eastern Conference crowns Tuesday, March 13 (7:00 p.m. CDT) when they play host to the Prince Albert Raiders.
